Baccarat Online

Baccarat is an exciting table game played in casinos all over the world, and the online version is just as fun. It is a pretty easy game, and you don’t need to be an accomplished casino player to try it out.

There are various variations of the game, but the most common variant in a majority of American casinos is Punto Banco which translates to player-banker. In the past, there was a misconception that the game was only for the high rolling gamblers but today it is enjoyed by players of all levels, including the low stakes. Many players prefer Baccarat online to other classic casino games because of its simplicity and lucrative payouts.

How To Play Baccarat Online

Online Baccarat is all about comparing card values, and it is played between two hands namely Player and Banker. In Baccarat, a croupier draws the cards and you don’t have to worry about the game rules because the dealer does all the work. After the hands are dealt, the values of the cards are compared and the best hand wins. There are three possible outcomes in each round of the game. They are:

  • A win for the player hand
  • A win for the banker
  • Or a tie. The tie is also called a push.

A few years ago, this thrilling game was only offered in brick-and-mortar casinos but you can now enjoy it from the comfort of your home thanks to online casinos. A majority of internet casinos even allow you to play live Baccarat with real-life croupiers for real money. All you need is your stake and reliable internet and you can play the game from any remote location.

However, you need to understand the nitty-gritty of online casino Baccarat before you can find a table to begin playing, and we have captured all the basics of the game in this detailed guide.

Read our in-depth Live Dealer Baccarat Playing Guide to learn everything you need to know about the game and become a real pro at placing winning Baccarat bets.

Baccarat Explained

As already mentioned, a game of Online Baccarat revolves around comparing card values. The objective of the game is to get as close to 9 as possible. The totals of the cards are compared and the hand with the higher value wins the round.

Online Baccarat Strategy

Word out there is that Baccarat Online is purely a game of chance and many people will say that you don’t require any skills to win a coup, which is partially true. However, the whole truth is that you can use a few strategies and tips to enhance your odds of picking the best hand or getting the best returns on your stake.

For starters, here are some valuable tips that you can use to remain ahead in the game:

  1. Always remember that the Banker’s hand is your best bet and it is bound to win more than 50% of the time. You can place your first bet on this hand every time you choose a table in Live Dealer Baccarat. The Banker-only betting system is particularly recommended if you are playing Mini-Baccarat online.
  2. Avoid the Tie bet as much as you can. The probability that the point totals will be the same after the hands are dealt is very minimal, and there is no need of risking your bet on this kind of outcome.
  3. Bet according to the winning streak. If you notice that the Banker’s hand keeps winning, bet on this hand until the Player bet wins. When this happens, wait for one more round before deciding whether to jump on the other hand.
  4. You can take notes to keep track of the winning hands if the casino does not provide players with this information. The trends can go a long way in helping you place your next bet.
  5. Being conscious of your finances is crucial in Online Baccarat since it is a game of chance. Although the game is player-friendly, sometimes the odds can work against you and you might find yourself experiencing a streak of ills. When caught in this situation, the worst you can do is to try and chase the losses. It is more advisable for a player to take a break from the game if they exceed their loss limits, and the same discipline is also recommended when you find that the odds are in your favor.

Baccarat Gameplay

The game of online casino Baccarat is played on a large table that can sit up to 14 players. There is another version called Mini Baccarat (which many simply refer to now as Baccarat due to the games being almost identical) that we discuss below. Each game begins with the placing of bets, and the betting options are very flexible across all NJ online casinos. What’s more, you can even start with smaller wagers and increase your stake as the game progresses.

When playing Baccarat online, a player can bet on either of the two hands, Player or Banker. It is important to note that Banker does not refer to the house.

You can also bet on a Tie if you are not afraid of taking risks, but seasoned players will tell you that the probability of the hands resulting in a tie is very low, but the payout pays 9 to 1.

Baccarat Tie Example

Baccarat Rules

Once the bets have been placed, the dealer will draw the cards from a shoe, and both the Player and Banker’s hands are dealt two cards. According to Baccarat rules, the Player hand goes first and they can draw a third card depending on the total value of their first two cards. Usually, a total of 8 or 9 is considered a natural win for either Player or Banker. The Player’s hand stands if the points total is 6 or 7, and they hit and draw a third card if the value of the hand is 0 to 5. The decision on whether a third card will be drawn by the Banker depends on the Player’s third card.

How To Win In Baccarat

To win a round of the game, all you need to do is bet on the hand with totals closest to 9. In some instances, the hands result in a tie and in this case there is no winner or loser. This scenario is also referred to as a push.

Baccarat rules may seem a little bit complicated to new players but the good thing about them is that they are universal and you will find a copy on every table. The tables below explain the rules for each hand after the first two cards are drawn.

Player

If the total of the first two cards is

Action

8 or 9

Natural win or stand

6 or 7

Stand

0-5

Hit and draw a third card

Banker

If the total value of the first two cards is

Action

8 or 9

Natural win or stand

7

Stand

0, 1, or 2

Hit and draw a third card

3, 4, 5, and 6

Can draw or stand depending on the third card drawn by the player

Baccarat Card Values

Just like in other table games like Blackjack, each card in Baccarat is assigned a value to help in the calculation of point totals. The values of the cards are as follows:

  • Ace cards have a value of 1
  • Face cards (Jack, Queen, and King) and Tens (10) count as zero
  • Cards 2 through 9 have a value equivalent to their face value.

Since the object of the game is to get as close to 9 as possible, the value of a hand cannot exceed 9. When the point totals for the Player or Banker’s hand runs over, simply subtract 10 from the total value. For example, if you are dealt an 8 and a 9 for a total of 17, the actual value of the hand is 7. Similarly, the value of 3 and 7 is zero, while being dealt 5 and 7 means your total is 2.

Player’s Hand

The Player’s hand is one of the two bets in the game of Baccarat, and it is usually the first hand to be completed in each round. If you bet on the Player’s hand, your cards will be exposed first and the dealer will call out the totals before revealing the Banker’s hand.

The house edge on this hand is 1.24% and your winnings from this bet are paid out in even. This means that if you place a $50 bet on the Player’s hand and your bet wins, you will receive your initial stake back and an extra $50. The other thing is that you get to keep all your winnings.

Baccarat Win Example

Banker’s Hand

Ask any seasoned Baccarat player and they will tell you that the Banker’s hand is your best bet in the game. Your probability of winning from this bet is much higher because of the strict rules governing how the third card is drawn, and statistics have proven that the chances of winning a bet placed on this hand are slightly above 50%.

However, you have to pay a commission of 5% of all your winnings from this bet to the casino and this is done to ensure that the house retains an edge over the customers. The house-edge on the Banker’s hand is about 1.06% which makes the payout margins on this bet more favorable compared to the Player’s hand.

Baccarat Banker Win Example

Winning Payouts

The winning payouts for the two hands are awarded as follows:

Banker’s hand: If your bet on the Banker’s hand wins, you will be paid out in the ratio of 19 to 20 because you have to pay a commission of 5% on your winnings to the house. This means that if you place a bet of $100 on the Banker’s hand and it wins, your payout will be $100 but you will actually pocket $95 in winnings after the 5% commission is factored.

Player’s hand: Winning bets placed on the player’s hand are paid out in the ratio of 1 to 1 or even money.

Sometimes, a player may decide to bet on a Tie and the casino also awards payouts for these bets. If the Player’s and Banker’s hands finish in a Tie, the house pays in the ratio of 8 to 1, resulting in an insanely high house edge of 14.4%. For this reason, this bet is considered the worst bet that a player can place in Online Baccarat.

Baccarat Dragon Bonus Side Bet

Quite possibly the most popular side bet in Online Baccarat, the Dragon Bonus is a side bet is paid out on hands that are natural winners or for wins by a large margin. Just like with your standard Baccarat bet, you can choose the Banker or Player. You must win by 4 or more points to collect a Dragon Bonus payout. Here are the common payouts for a Dragon Bonus bet:

  • Natural win: Pays 1:1
  • Natural tie: Push
  • 9-point win: Pays 30:1
  • 8-point win: Pays 10:1
  • 7-point win: Pays 6:1
  • 6-point win: Pays 4:1
  • 5-point win: Pays 2:1
  • 4-point win: Pays 1:1

If you do not achieve these results, you lose your Dragon Bonus side bet. Depending on the number of decks, the house edge for Player bets ranges between 2.65% and 2.70%, while the house edge for Banker bets ranges between 9.37% and 9.42%.

What Is Mini Baccarat?

You must have come across the term Mini-Baccarat in a majority of online casinos and it is only natural to ask yourself how different it is from the traditional Baccarat game. Well, Online Mini-Baccarat is more like the conventional game only that it is played on a smaller table that takes up to eight players. Also, the bet limits for Mini-Baccarat tend to be a little lower, and you can find tables with betting minimums of up to $10. Lastly, the action plays out much faster in Mini-Baccarat Online and if you are playing in a land-based casino, the dealer does all the work as the players are not allowed to handle the cards.

The gameplay in the mini version is pretty much like in traditional Baccarat and the rules are similar. All that is required of a player is a little understanding of some basics of the game, such as the commissions paid out to the house after the bets are settled because you’ll be required to pay your dues before you can leave a table.

It is also advisable for a new player to learn some standard Baccarat terms so that they can understand the table lingo during the rounds. Some of these terms are explained in the section below.

Baccarat Terminology

Online Baccarat uses sophisticated terms and most of the words used in the game are borrowed from other foreign languages like Spanish, Italian and French. If you are keen on becoming a Baccarat pro, it is highly recommended that you acquaint yourself with as many terms and phrases as possible, and you can start by learning them here.

  • Punto: French terminology for the Player’s hand in Baccarat
  • Banco: Refers to the Banker’s hand in the game
  • Punto Banco: The term is used to refer to a common variation of Baccarat that is popular across North America and it is the version offered in most American casinos online. The phrase is derived from the two French words, Punto and Banco, and it means Player Banker
  • High roller: A player who shows consistency in placing large bets
  • Croupier: The dealer can also be referred to as the Croupier in Baccarat
  • Live Dealer Baccarat: The phrase is used for online Baccarat offered by real-life dealers or croupiers as opposed to playing against computer software. In NJ online casinos, the game is streamed live from the land-based properties and you can only play using real money
  • Cut: A cut is an action of splitting a deck of cards at a random point after shuffling. After cutting, the croupier will place the bottom section on top of the upper one
  • Coup: A coup is simply a round of the game
  • Burn: To burn is to discard the first card in a shoe, and this is mostly done by the croupier in a land-based casino
  • Shoe: The shoe is the device that holds the deck of cards used in a game of Baccarat. The croupier or dealer draws the cards from the shoe
  • Commission: A commission is the percentage of money paid to the casino by a player who wins on a banker bet. Usually, the casino operator will deduct 5% of all your winnings from the banker bet and this means that the house maintains an edge over the player in the game
  • Carte: It means the same as a hit and it is the term to use if you wish to be dealt another card
  • Natural win: The Player or Banker gets a natural win if the total of their first two cards is 8 or 9. When this happens, the round ends and the bettors are paid accordingly.
  • Pass: A pass is basically a win in the game
  • Tie: It is also called a push or standoff. This happens when both the Player and Banker’s hands end up with the same score
  • Flat bet: If a player makes a consistent bet throughout the game, the wager is said to be a flat bet
