The Senate State Government Committee recently passed the Senate Study Bill 1168 with an 8-6 vote. The House Senate Govement Committee is also prepared to vote on similar legislation with the House Study Bill 198 that was approved by a subcommittee.
The states 19 casinos, as well as horse racing tracks and other gambling facilities, will be allowed to apply for IA sports betting licenses.
What Is In The Iowa Sports Betting Legislation?
Currently, there are 10 sports betting bills in the Iowa legislature, however, the two most recent bills (one in the House and one in the Senate) have gained the most steam. Here is a representation of that legislation:
- A tax rate of 6.75 percent on gross gaming revenue.
- In the House bill, casinos would pay a $15,000 annual sport betting fee and $5,000 for daily fantasy sports.
- Betting would be allowed on professional and collegiate sports.
- Allow online and mobile sports betting. The Senate bills outlines an in-person signup for an online sports betting account. This may be only an 18-month requirement for casinos.
- Daily fantasy sports would be made legal.
Prairie Meadows Sportsbook Ready To Go
Prairie Meadows, the Altoona racetrack and casino has taken its fourth-floor horse racing simulcast location and turned it into a sportsbook. The Prairie Meadows Sportsbook will have an arena-style scoreboard hanging from the ceiling and rows of televisions. A digital display will be lined around the sportsbook walls to show the latest sports news and scores. Televisions with odds with be above the betting windows. The sportsbook will have dozens of televisions and seating, including a bar area that will serve food and drinks.
The Prairie Meadows Casino partnered with William Hill to run the sports betting operation.
