What Is Live Dealer Three Card Poker?

Live Dealer Three Card Poker is a simplified version of standard poker that is more fun, easy to focus on, and easy to pick up at any of the online casinos that offer it. You are dealt three cards and raise or fold based on the strength of those three cards against the dealer’s possible hand.

Live Dealer 3 Card Poker Rules

No matter if you’re a novice poker player or if you’ve played various versions of poker over the years, Live Dealer Three Card Poker is one of the easiest card games to learn and get good at, especially after reading our guide. Here are the rules for playing Live Dealer 3 Card Poker:

  • Each hand of Live Dealer Three Card Poker starts off with the ability to place an ante. You can also place a Pair Plus bet or a Six Card Bonus bet, which we’ll go over later in the guide
  • The dealer will deal you three cards face up while dealing themselves three cards face down
  • The dealer will announce your three cards, and the screen will give you the choice of raising your bet equal to your ante or folding to surrender your initial bet
  • If you choose to raise your bet, the dealer will flip over their cards to see if they qualify. The dealer has to have a queen high or better to qualify, or else you automatically win twice your initial bet and receive your raised bet back if you chose to play your cards
  • If the dealer has a queen or higher, they qualify and your hand will be compared to theirs to see who wins based on the hand rankings below. If your hand beats the dealer’s hand, you’ll win double your initial ante and raised bets. If the dealer’s hand beats yours, you lose both your ante and your raised bets. If you both have the same hand rank, the bets are a push
  • If you get a straight or better, you get an ante bonus that you can find under our Live Dealer Three Card Poker Payouts and Odds. Also, if you place a Pair Plus bet at the beginning of the hand and get a straight or better, you will be eligible for an additional payout that you can find under the Pair Plus payouts in the Live Dealer 3 Card Poker Payouts and Odds section

Live Dealer Three Card Poker Terminology

  • Live Dealer 3 Card Poker: A style of poker played with a live dealer with a standard 52-card deck, where you’re dealt three cards and wager based on those three only. You can play Live Dealer 3 Card Poker two ways: Ante and Play and Pair Plus
  • Ante and Play: A standard way of playing Live Three Card Poker Online, where you place an ante before each hand and then raise or fold based on the three cards the live dealer gives you. Players will place a play bet if they feel like their cards are good enough to beat the dealer’s hand, or if they feel that the dealer will not have a qualifying hand of Queen high
  • Play Bet: The bet made after the cards are dealt when you believe your hand is better than the dealer’s hand, or if you think the dealer doesn’t have a qualifying hand
  • Pair Plus: An optional side bet you can make at the beginning of each hand of Live Dealer Three Card Poker. When you place a Pair Plus bet, you are betting that your hand will contain a poker combination starting at a pair or higher based on the hand rankings below. If you have a pair or higher on the rankings, you will get a payout according to our Three Card Poker Payouts and Odds below
  • Six Card Bonus: Another optional side bet you can make at the beginning of each hand that combines your hand plus the dealer’s hand in order to qualify for a payout. A Six Card Bonus is based on standard poker hand rankings starting at Three of a Kind. Found at many land-based casinos and online casinos, it’s a chance for a huge payout that you can find under our Three Card Poker Payouts and Odds below
  • Ante Bonus: In addition to your standard winnings based off of beating the dealer’s hand in Ante and Play, you can get an extra reward based on the payout structure listed in our Three Card Poker Payouts and Odds listed below with the Ante Bonus if you get one of the following hands:
    • Straight
    • Three of a Kind
    • Straight Flush
  • Qualifying Hand: As we’ve stated previously, the dealer must have at least a Queen high hand in order to have a qualifying hand. If a dealer does not qualify, you receive your Play wager back as a push, while your ante is paid out 1 to 1
  • Poker Combinations, listed in order of payout value:
    • Pair: Any two cards of the same denomination, such as a Pair of Nines or a Pair of Aces

Types Of Live Dealer 3 Card Poker Bets

Here are the different types of bets you can make in Live Three Card Poker Online:

Ante and Play Bets

Every round of Live Dealer 3 Card Poker begins with an ante. After playing the ante, three cards are dealt to you and the dealer, with the dealer’s cards dealt face down.

Depending on the strength of your hand based on our hand rankings in our Three Card Poker Hand Rankings and our 3 Card Poker Payouts and Odds section, make a decision as to whether or not you’d like to place a Play bet that matches your Ante. Or if you feel like your hand isn’t strong enough to beat the dealer’s hand, you can Fold. Our Live Dealer Three Card Poker Strategy section can help you make a more informed decision to gain an advantage over the dealer.

If you play, your Play bet is added to the Play spot on the table. The dealer turns over their cards and you’ll immediately see the winning decision and your total payout on the screen. The dealer needs to have a Queen or higher in order to qualify, so if they don’t, you get a payout of 1 to 1 on your Ante but receive your Play bet back as a push. If they have a Queen or higher, a final determination is made based on the hand rankings and if you win, a payout is made based on the Payouts and Odds table listed below.

Pair Plus Bets

One of the two optional side bets that you can make at the beginning of each hand, a Pair Plus bet is dependent on whether or not you are dealt a pair or higher based on the hand rankings listed above. A Pair Plus bet can be a winner regardless of whether or not you beat the dealer’s hand, which means you can break even or even win money, even if you lose your Ante and Play Bet.

Add a wager by clicking the Pair Plus spot on the table with the number of chips you want to bet. When the three cards are dealt, you can win immediately if you have a Pair or higher based on the Payouts and Odds table listed below.

Six Card Bonus

While the Six Card Bonus isn’t found at every Live Dealer 3 Card Poker table, if you come across it at online casinos, it’s a side bet you can make with extremely high payouts. A Six Card Bonus is not contingent on having a winning hand but instead gives you the chance to win a bonus payout based on the combinations made by combining your three cards with the dealer’s three cards, starting at Three of a Kind. Payouts are bigger than any other bet, as a Three of a Kind starts at an 8 to 1 payout and culminates with a possible 1,000 to 1 payout if you get a Royal Flush!

Three Card Poker House Edge

The house edge in 3 Card poker is 3.37% against the ante and 2.01% if you stick to the Queen-6-4 strategy and do the Play Bet. Here are the probabilities of hands you can make in 3 Card Poker, as well as the payouts on bonuses:

Live Dealer 3 Card Poker Strategy

While most 3 Card Poker online casino players have fun and do win money often playing every hand since the dealer won’t have a qualifying hand in every game, you’ll find that the house obtains a bigger advantage that way at 7 percent, more than double the normal 3 percent house edge. By using the Q64 strategy, you can keep the house advantage small and open yourself up to winning big in Live Three Card Poker Online.

Q-6-4 Three Card Poker

You can keep the house edge at online casinos low when you utilize the Q64 strategy for Live Dealer 3 Card Poker. Simply put, if you have a Queen high and your other two cards are at least a Six and a Four, you should play a Play bet. Utilizing the Q64 strategy gives you a proven best chance over time at beating the dealer’s hand or receiving your Play bet back when the dealer doesn’t qualify.

Be Cautious With Playing The Pair Plus, Six Card Bonus Side Bets

The payouts for both the Pair Plus and Six Card Bonus side bets are very enticing, but you have to be able to deal with the prospect of losing those side bets repeatedly until you’re able to hit on them and gain a big payout in return.

Our hand probability odds table shows that 25 percent of the time, you’ll get a pair or better with the three cards you are dealt. So if you’re shooting for the Pair Plus bet, realize you might only win 1/4th of the time you place it. If you’re going for a Flush or higher, that probability shrinks to 8 percent. And the Six Card Bonus, although it has high payouts when it does hit, gives you a 7.28 percent chance to get a hand of Three of a Card or higher when your hand and the dealer’s hand are combined. If you’re looking for big winnings and can push through the losses associated with those side bets, you can set yourself up for some possibly huge payouts.
