Gambling fans in the Great Lake State can look forward to various online casino games including slots, blackjack, roulette, video poker, and more. And with online gambling recently becoming legal, expect more and more new online casinos to join the fray.

Newest MI Online Casino

Following a drawn-out process going back to 2019, the Michigan Gaming Control Board and other online betting stakeholders finally settled on a Jan. 22, 2021 launch date for online casinos.

Like New Jersey and Pennsylvania, multiple casinos launched on the same day in Michigan, ushering in a new age of casino betting in the Great Lakes State. The newest casino in the state is Golden Nugget.

Golden Nugget Casino – Launched Jan. 22, 2021

Golden Nugget Casino is the newest online casino in Michigan, launching on January 22, 2021. The gambling entertainment giant opened its first land-based casino in Las Vegas in 1946 and entered the online casino market in 2013 when New Jersey legalized online gambling.

Today, the Golden Nugget chain of casinos is owned and operated by Landry’s Incorporated. The casino partnered with Ojibwa Casino & the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community (KBIC) to bring its premium online casino games to Michigan. You can choose from hundreds of slots, including famous progressive slots like Mercy of the Gods and Divine Fortune.

Additionally, the casino offers a few variations of video poker, roulette, baccarat, and blackjack.

Sports betting fans will be pleased to hear that Golden Nugget also launched a sportsbook along with its online casino. You may also access the online casino or sportsbook via the Golden Nugget mobile app available on Android and iOS.

The online casino has long established a reputation as having the most extensive casino game library in the business. Its solid reputation also extends to the online casino’s clean, simple, and user-friendly interface.

The Golden Nugget Casino is widely considered the gold standard for online casino gaming in the United States. In fact, it was the first online casino to offer live dealer games in the United States back in 2016.

New MI Online Casinos

FanDuel Casino – Launched Jan. 22, 2021

FanDuel has built its reputation on its daily fantasy sports and sportsbook, but its online casino offerings are nothing to scoff at. Self-proclaimed America’s #1 sportsbook, FanDuel partnered with MotorCity Casino to make its online casino Michigan debut on January 22, 2021.

You can play FanDuel Casino on desktop or via its mobile app. The gaming giant has two standalone apps for casino and sports betting. Both apps are available on iOS and Android.

When you arrive at FanDuel’s website, it is presented as a sportsbook, but you can find the casino at the top and get redirected to the online gambling site when you click the casino option. You can then play on your browser or download the app.

FanDuel prides itself on being a sportsbook, but its online casino impresses on many fronts. First off, the casino’s choice of the GAN iGaming platform is a good move. GAN is well-known for its intuitive interface and simple but functional design.

Secondly, FanDuel features some of the best casino games suppliers, including NetEnt, Amaya, and IGT. The lesser-known Incredible Technologies also offers interesting and novel casino games that you can only find on FanDuel.

While still being fairly young in the game, the online casino offers a few dozen slot games, including all-time favorites like Wheel of Fortune, Divine Fortune, and Triple Red Hot 777. You also get a few variations of video poker, poker, blackjack, baccarat, and roulette.

Currently, the game selection is limited compared to other online casinos like Golden Nugget, but FanDuel is expanding its game catalog at an impressive rate. If you tend to gravitate more toward fantasy sports or sports betting, but occasionally like to dabble in casino games, FanDuel offers the perfect compromise.

FanDuel Casino is owned by the FanDuel Group, a New York City-based sports-tech entertainment company. The company was founded in 2009 and has a hand in fantasy sports, sportsbook, online casino, and horse race betting.

BetMGM Casino – Launched Jan. 22, 2021

BetMGM Casino runs on the GVC iGaming platform. Besides offering a world-class gaming platform, GVC is noted for its advocacy on problem gambling.

Naturally, BetMGM Casino partnered with its land-based casino, the MGM Grand Detroit, to acquire its online gambling license. BetMGM launched its Michigan online casino on January 22, 2021.

The online casino has an impressive casino game library with hundreds of slot titles. The slots also feature remarkable variety, including classic three-reel slots and the more innovative five-reel slots. Progressive jackpots also abound on the BetMGM Online Casino. You may also play the casino games on the BetMGM mobile app, which is available for iOS and Android.

Additionally, the casino offers video poker, roulette, blackjack, and baccarat. You will also find rare casino games such as virtual sports betting.

MGM Resorts is a world-class American hospitality and entertainment company. The company owns more than 29 hotels and destination gaming, including in Las Vegas, New Jersey, Maryland, Mississippi, and Detroit. Some of the big names under the MGM Resorts umbrella include MGM Grand, Mandalay Bay, Bellagio, and Park MGM.

DraftKings Casino – Launched Jan. 22, 2021

DraftKings partnered with The Bay Mills Resort & Casino in Brimley to enter the Michigan online casino market on January 22, 2021. DraftKings is most famous for its fantasy sports and sportsbook but is becoming a real player in the online casino game.

Its gambling site offers equally high-quality software, a good selection of casino games, and DraftKings’ signature clean, visually appealing, and seamless interface.

On the casino side, DraftKings partners with high-end software providers like Evolution Gaming, IGT, Games Lab, and GameArt. Slots dominate the online casino’s catalog with an ever-expanding list of games to choose from. Popular slot titles include White Rabbit, Butterfly Staxx, and Jackpot Inferno.

Table games fans can choose from a variety of video poker, blackjack, roulette, baccarat, and more. DraftKings offers a diverse range of video poker options, including Draw Poker, Double Bonus Poker, and Jacks or Better.

DraftKings also has a mobile casino app available on Android and iOS. The brand also launched an online sportsbook in Michigan, which is also available for iOS and Android.

DraftKings is the brainchild of Mathew Kalish, Jason Robins, and Paul Liberman and launched in 2012. The brand is best known for its sportsbook and has a foothold in legal betting states across the US.

Why Sign Up To A New Online Casino?

One of the best things about signing up for a new online casino is the bonuses and promotions. When multiple casinos launch on the same date, the operators try to woo customers any way they can.

Bonuses and promotions are a time-tested incentive for attracting new players. You can benefit from generous bonuses, including 100% deposit matches, free spins, no-deposit bonuses, and many more.

Most new casinos also offer free demo games for potential customers to try out. You don’t have to sign up to the casino, provide personal information, or even make a deposit. Demo games offer an easy way to try out the different casinos without committing. If nothing else, free casino games are a great way to pass the time if you’re not the betting type.

Lastly, new casinos are more likely to offer new and novel games, as well as push promotions to existing players after they sign up.

New casinos, especially in a recently launched state like Michigan, need a way to stand out from the crowd. Novelty games like seven-reel slots, Slingo (a combination of slots and bingo), and virtual sports are just some of the ways new online casinos create attention.

Online Casinos Arriving Soon

Hollywood Casino

Hollywood Casino is expected to launch soon in Michigan and has announced its partnership with Greektown Casino in Detroit. The online casino is live in Pennsylvania, offering plenty of slot titles, various table games, and more.

Hollywood Casino is a subsidiary of Penn National Gaming. The parent company is based in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, and operates 43 casinos and racetracks across America and Canada.

Other casinos expected to launch soon in Michigan include:

  • Wynn Casino
  • TwinSpires Casino
  • Parx Casino
  • PointsBet Casino

Please note that this list of expected casinos is merely speculative. All we know is that the casinos mentioned above have already partnered with land-based casinos in Michigan. Only time will tell if these casinos will launch an online presence.

Michigan’s Gambling History

Michigan has a relatively long history of legal gambling, dating back to 1933 with the passing of the Racing Act. This act regulates horse racing in the state.

In 1972, Michigan passed Public Act 239, which legalized state lottery. Hermus Millsaps won the first $1 million from the lottery in 1973. The proceeds of the lottery go to Michigan’s public schools.

The Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort in Mt. Pleasant became the first official legal casino in Michigan in 1993. The Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe signed a contract with the state in exchange for 2% of the casino’s winnings.

The next big event in Michigan’s gambling history was in 1997 with the signing of the Michigan Gaming Control & Revenue Act into law. The new law authorized the construction of three licensed commercial casinos in Detroit.

In July 1999, MGM Grand Detroit opened its doors, followed by MotorCity Casino Hotel later the same year. Finally, Greektown Casino Hotel opened in Detroit in 2000 to become the city’s third commercial casino.

Lastly, in December 2019, Michigan legalized online gambling, fantasy sports, sports betting, and online poker.

First Online Casinos That Launched

Although online gambling was officially legal in Michigan in 2019, the first online casinos launched in 2021. The delay is attributed to legislative and regulatory frameworks that needed to be in place before online casinos could officially launch.

The first three online casinos in Michigan launched on Jan. 22, 2021, within hours of each other. These casinos are:

  • Golden Nugget Casino
  • FanDuel Casino
  • BetMGM Casino

Three more online casinos later joined in the fray, including:

  • William Hill Casino: Jan. 22, 2021
  • BetRivers Casino: Jan. 22, 2021
  • DraftKings Casino: Jan. 22, 2021

PokerStars joined as a poker site on Jan. 29, 2021.

How Many Casinos Are in MI?

There are 26 land-based casinos in Michigan, putting Michigan in tenth place on the list of states with the most casinos.

Only three casinos are commercial casinos. The other 23 casinos are tribal casinos. At the time of this writing, there are six online casinos. Golden Nugget, FanDuel, and BetMGM were first to hit the market, followed by others later the same day and in the following days and weeks.

The Future of Michigan Online Casinos

You may have noticed that Live Dealer games are conspicuously missing from these new MI online casinos. At this time, no casino in Michigan offers live dealer games.

This is hardly surprising given that live studios and the regulations surrounding live dealer betting takes time. For example, New Jersey bettors had to wait three years after online casinos officially launched to enjoy Live Dealer games.

PointsBet and BetMGM have already announced partnerships with Evolution Gaming, one of the two suppliers of Live Dealer platforms. We expect it won’t be too long before these games are available to Michigan players.

The future for Michigan’s betting market has never looked brighter. The licensed casinos will likely take a significant chunk of offshore casino’s revenues. Experts estimate that the online casinos will generate up to $225 million within the first year of legalization. Revenue that once went to international syndicates will now circulate back in the state.

Finally, many experts believe that Michigan is poised to become one of the country’s biggest mobile betting markets.
