Live sports in the United States may be temporarily shut down, but fans and bettors should be made aware that horse racing is still going on!

Plenty of sports fans have been looking for new ways to place wagers and while niche sporting leagues from around the world have seen an increase in betting, many might not know that horse racing is alive and well at several racetracks across the country.

One of those famous racetracks comes to us from the state of Arkansas. Oaklawn Park is located in Hot Springs, a gorgeous resort town that has a casino built around the racetrack. While the casino is closed, horse racing is still going on live every Thursday - Sunday.

Oaklawn Park Race History

Oaklawn Park first opened on February 24, 1905. The race track itself is a sandy loam oval with four layers that provides solid drainage along with a firm base and a cushioned top perfect for racing. The width of the track is 70 feet on turns, 80 down the stretch which is 1,155 in length. It took until 1929 to allow racing and horse race betting at the track, with the prominent Arkansas Derby taking place for the first time in 1936.

Ranked near the top of the list of thoroughbred race tracks in North America, it has been home to some of the most notable horses in horse racing history.

To commemorate its 100th anniversary in 2004, Oaklawn Park offered a $5 million bonus for any horse that could win its two graded stakes races, the Rebel Stakes and Arkansas Derby, and then go on to win the Kentucky Derby. Smarty Jones was able to claim the bonus that year.

American Pharoah, the 2015 Triple Crown winner, also won the Rebel Stakes and Arkansas Derby along the way to their huge victory.

Where Is Oaklawn Park Race Track?

2705 Central Ave.

Hot Springs, AR 71901

Besides the race track, the casino resort has slot games, table games, and in-person sports betting.
