Oaklawn Park first opened on February 24, 1905. The race track itself is a sandy loam oval with four layers that provides solid drainage along with a firm base and a cushioned top perfect for racing. The width of the track is 70 feet on turns, 80 down the stretch which is 1,155 in length. It took until 1929 to allow racing and horse race betting at the track, with the prominent Arkansas Derby taking place for the first time in 1936.
