Will Rogers Downs was opened in 1987 but ran into financial trouble right away even though it was only the second pari-mutuel track in Oklahoma at the time. It went into bankruptcy in 2001 and was purchased by the Cherokee Nation in 2004.

After that purchase and over $2 million in improvements to the site and the grounds, Will Rogers Downs began its climb out of the doldrums. The collaboration of the Cherokee Casino along with Will Rogers Downs proved to be mutually beneficial and helped the track to grow.

The track is a one-mile dirt oval with a 2,700-seat grandstand. Will Rogers Downs also houses the largest RV park in Oklahoma, which helps attract many more visitors to the grounds. Its proximity to Tulsa gives easy access to visitors from the second-largest city in Oklahoma.
