2020 BMW Championship Picks – FedEx Cup Predictions

The FedEx Cup Playoffs are making its way to Illinois, and we’re getting ready with some 2020 BMW Championship predictions!

The second of three playoff events will take place from August 27th to August 30th at the North Course at Olympia Fields Country Club, located just south of Chicago. If the betting turnout is anything like the first playoff event was, online sports betting sites in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and other states where wagering is legal are going to be pretty busy this week.

There are plenty of markets available and options to choose from, and we’ll get into some of those as we preview our BMW Championship betting picks.

2020 BMW Championships Betting Tips – Golf Betting Strategy

Let’s not forget that this is the second of three postseason events. Here is the FedEx Cup Playoffs schedule:

  • The Northern Trust (August 20-23, TPC Boston)
  • BMW Championship (August 27-30, Olympia Fields CC)
  • TOUR Championship (September 4-7, East Lake GC)

At The Northern Trust, the top 125 players were in the field but that number has been slimmed down for the BMW. This week’s event features the top 70 golfers in the point standings trying to make it into the top 30 over the course of the weekend in order to reach the TOUR Championship. An important thing to note about this week is that since there are only 70 players, it is a no-cut event, so every player is around for all four days.

The BMW Championship venue is Olympia Fields Country Club (North), which has hosted several major championships including the 2003 US Open, the 2015 US Amateur, and the 2017 Women’s PGA Championship.

The track is known for elevation changes, well-placed bunkers, some pretty gnarly tough, a few tree-lined fairways, and several holes featuring a small body of water known as Butterfield Creek. In total, it sounds like a pretty challenging test, which is perfect for a playoff event.

Here are some Olympia Fields key stats to consider when making 2020 BMW Championship Picks:

  • Strokes Gained: Tee-To-Green
  • SG: Approach The Green
  • Greens In Regulation
  • Par 4 Efficiency (450-500 Yards)
  • SG: Putting
  • Scrambling

BMW Championship 2020 Predictions – Golf Betting Picks

Make BMW Golf Picks At BetMGM!

The North Course at Olympia Fields measures nearly 7,400 yards and Par is 70 with only two par-5 holes. According to the course’s official scorecard, seven of the 12 holes that are Par 4s measure between 450 and 500 yards.

The well-placed bunkers and tight fairways put a premium on accuracy and approach, and gaining strokes once you’re on the greens will also likely be one of the things that separate the contenders from the pack this week. All that said, dismissing the big hitters for all of that alone would be a huge mistake, because plenty of these guys could miss the fairway and still be close enough to find the green from the rough.

Once you’re ready to bet, consider the following 2020 BMW Championship predictions:

  • Tyrell Hatton To Win (+4500)

The BMW Championship will only be Hatton’s 10th PGA event of the season but it’s hard to argue with results. The Englishman won the Arnold Palmer Invitation just before the break and notched two top fives post-restart as well.

After a couple of off weeks, Hatton found his game at The Northern Trust, just in time to hold onto the 17th spot in the points standings going into next week. His approach and tee-to-green game are elite and he could provide value by fitting Olympia Fields better than some others, even if his recent performances are a little hit-and-miss.

BMW Championship 2020 Picks – Finishing Position & Matchups Golf Betting

BMW OddsMake BMW Championship Picks At DK!

There are other ways to make BMW Championship picks besides picking outright winners, and we do it here every week by selecting finishing positions and matchups.

With only 70 players in the field for this event as opposed to the 150+ we normally see, it can be trickier but easier to lock players into finishing position wagers knowing there are many fewer golfers to compete with. The margin for error on the leaderboard is worth the decrease in odds in many cases, as the bet becomes more winnable and it provides a rooting interest for longer than an outright wager normally would.

Think about some of the following golfers if betting on 2020 BMW Championship odds for finishing position:

  • Bryson DeChambeau Top 10 (+188)

As was the case for many of the world’s best, The Northern Trust didn’t go well for Bryson, who very rarely loses strokes on approach and with the putter. Expect something much different this week for a player who is having a remarkable season and whose skills fit the course.

DeChambeau ranks top 10 on tour in Strokes Gained: Tee-To-Green and SG: Putting. He is inside the top 20 in the Scrambling statistic and is above-average from the sand. He’s also one of the best ball strikers you’ll find and even though it’s been said that Bentgrass is his worse surface, he returned from the Charles Schwab with a T-3 finish on Bentgrass greens.

Bryson knows he’s got some work to do in setting himself up in good position for next week at East Lake and he is simply having too good of a season to follow up one playoff dud with another. We fully expect to see him in the running so he could be worth selecting as one of your BMW Championship predictions. Oddsmakers must be in agreement considering his top 10 line already dropped from +188 to +150 on DraftKings.

  • Tony Finau Top 20 (+163)

Following a rough two days at The Northern Trust, Tony Finau’s spot in the top 30 is in danger since he now ranks No. 29 and could easily be bumped out of contention for next week. That means he’s going to need a strong performance to hold onto his spot, and we’re taking one more crack at Finau’s recent form.

Even though he hasn’t won this season, Finau has been one of the best players since the restart. His Par 4 efficiency, approach, and tee-to-green numbers are all good enough for him to compete in any event and for what it’s worth, he did have three top-10s in his last four events before the playoffs (including the PGA Championship).

Finau finished in the top five in last year’s BMW and even though it was at a different course, at least we know he does come to play during the second week of the postseason.

  • Kevin Kisner Top 30 (-165)

Kisner isn’t a long hitter by any stretch, but sometimes you just can’t fade good form. He makes up for his length deficiencies with great accuracy, strong iron play, and awesome putting, all of which are needed at Olympia Fields.

In last year’s event, Kisner finished in the top 10 and last week, he charged all the way to -17 to finish in the top five. At this point, it’s four top 25s in a row and three top-20 finishes in a row, with the last two being top-five finishes. He’s now squarely in the top 30 and looking to make yet another move before time runs out.
