The PGA Tour is coming back after a three-month absence and we are celebrating by making some Charles Schwab Challenge betting picks!
Although some sports have already begun the process of coming back, most of North America’s largest leagues aren’t quite there yet as our society attempts to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. the return of professional golf may signal the largest bit of good news for sports fans and bettors in quite some time.
As we know, spring and summer are normally littered with high-profile events including various majors. But due to the re-working of the 2020 PGA Tour schedule, those events have been pushed off to later in the year as action resumes at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas.
Online sportsbooks in New Jersey and various other states where betting is legal are offering odds on the event, so all that’s left to do is make some golf betting picks and impatiently wait for the Charles Schwab Challenge to begin.
Before placing any bets, it’s important to know the characteristics of the course along with any other factors that could come into play.
Usually, part of the betting process is looking at recent results but with so much time off, going by the key statistics that could matter at Colonial is even more vital than normal. At Colonial, where par is 70 and the track is just over 7,200 yards, here are some categories to consider:
Besides the characteristics of the course, part of what could bring some of these statistics into play is the expected weather.
Although it appears the sun will be out in Fort Worth, so will the wind, and reports indicate this won’t be a situation where the birdies are flying around all week. Justin Rose won at Colonial in 2018 with a -20 but we should expect numbers much closer to Kevin Na’s 2019 winning score of -13, or perhaps even in single digits.

The Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial is an event with a large field of nearly 150, including 15 of the top 20 in the world currently. Considering the size of the field and this being the first competitive event in three months, making golf betting predictions will be very tough as the season picks up.
With that said, there are still huge payouts to be had, so we are using the above-mentioned key stats along with past performances at Colonial CC to make our selections. Consider the following when making 2020 Charles Schwab Challenge picks this week:
Rahm is one of the favorites this week and if anyone’s momentum was stopped by the break, it was his. So basically, we are banking on the Spaniard picking up where he left off when the PGA Tour was suspended in March.
In five official events this season, Rahm has two top-five finishes and four top 10s, with another runner-up finish in the only unofficial event at the Hero World Challenge. He also has two top 10s in three events at Colonial and ranks fourth on tour in total strokes gained thanks to strong performances off the tee and on the green.
Simpson, like Rahm, was off to a career season before the suspension of the season. In five official events, Simpson posted one win, three top-five finishes, and four top 10s. He was even off to a roaring start in the opening round of The PLAYERS before the mid-tournament cancelation.
The stats also speak to Simpson’s dominance earlier in the season. He’s the top-ranking player on tour in Par 4 Scoring and Bogey Avoidance, ranks top-five in scrambling, and is also in the top 10 in strokes gained on approach.
Webb didn’t play in the event last season but does have two top-five finishes at Colonial in 2016 and 2017. Judging by the complete resume here, +2200 feels like a bargain, and it also could be some of the best value you’ll find on Simpson (+1800 on DraftKings currently).
Finau’s complete history at Colonial may not be too impressive, but his recent history could tell a different story, as he finished in second place all by himself at last year’s event. He also ranks well in some key stats, including being top 10 in approaching the green.
In total, Finau boats three top-10s in nine events this year, and a top-five finish in an event he was about to win before losing the lead at the end (Waste Management Open).
Even though Tony has had trouble closing out tournaments and is still seeking his first PGA Tour victory, this is a week where everyone could be rusty and +4000 odds are great value for a guy who finished second at Colonial in 2019.
On top of making Charles Schwab Challenge picks on the winner of the tournament, online sportsbooks are offering odds on other markets including props and ‘Finishing Position’, which allows bettors to wager on where golfers will end the tournament.
Markets for finishing position include Top 10, 20, 30, and 40, and despite the fact that these bets won’t pay out as heavily, they can still be a profitable way to bet and can also provide a rooting interest for the entirety of the tournament.
Make Golf Betting Picks At DraftKings!
Several sites offer lines on these categories but it should come as no surprise that DraftKings has tons of golf betting odds available for every event, plus a huge welcome bonus for new players. Simpson has two top-five finishes at Colonial in recent years, plus ranks near the top of the tour in several of the important categories this week. A top 10 finish pays +250 at DraftKings and is also appealing, but for the first tournament back we are playing the safer route and going with top 20.
There are few golfers on tour as consistent as the 2019 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year, and it makes sense when you see Sungjae Im at the top of the FedEx Cup standings. Not only does Im play every week, he normally winds up in a decent position.
Im has made the cut in 13 of 14 events and has four top-five finishes, five top 10s, and eight finishes in the top 25. He was also on fire going into the break, winning The Honda Classic and finishing solo third at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
This week, it’s hard to imagine 30 golfers coming out of the three-month break and finishing ahead of Im, who is excellent at Par 4 scoring and will probably be fresh and ready to resume his role as the PGA Tour’s iron man at Colonial.
When it comes to young players to look out for, golf fans and bettors need to be paying attention to Morikawa. The stats will say he struggles to put and scramble but he’s one of the best on tour approaching the green and should be at an advantage on a course that won’t automatically play to big hitter’s advantage.
The 23-year old has played 20 PGA Tour events and has yet to miss a cut. Being that Morikawa has finished in the top 40 in nine of 11 events this season and in seven of nine events last season before that as well.
In a tough field but one filled with golfers likely to be a bit rusty, we love the consistency Morikawa brings week-in and week-out to grab a top 40 spot at basically even money.
