As we build up toward The Masters in a couple of weeks, the PGA Tour is stopping through Texas and we’ve got some 2020 Houston Open predictions for all the bettors out there.
Regardless of where the event is held or its place on the schedule, one thing is for certain: the public loves wagering on golf, and that has been especially evident since the game returned in June.
With some fans returning to the course for the first time and a star-studded field prepping for the biggest event of the season, public interest should be high. The way we see it, online sportsbooks in New Jersey will see tons of action from the 2020 Houston Open, taking place from November 5 to 8 at Memorial Park Golf Course.
Betting sites offer a wide variety of markets and lucrative odds for many different categories, which is part of what attracts bettors to golf. So let’s try to help you win some money before The Masters by making some 2020 Houston Open picks!
As it helps set the stage for The Masters at Augusta National, the Houston Open is returning to some of its roots for this year’s event. After the tournament was off the schedule the last season, it returns to Memorial Park Golf Course, a municipal track where it was held from 1951 through 1963.
Fast forward half a century and Memorial Park is newly renovated and ready to host the Houston Open once again following a redesign by Tom Doak with help from Brooks Koepka as a player-consultant.
The track measures nearly 7,300 yards with a balance between short and long holes. There are five Par 3s, which range from pitching wedge to middle-iron distance. Memorial Park has generous fairways and many opportunities for risk/reward shots and holes that feature a couple of obstacles such as streams, ponds, and ravines. With just 19 bunkers on the course, the largest challenge will be navigating unforgiving rough, especially around the greens.

Knowing Brooks Koepka helped with the design, it’s no surprise to learn that Memorial Park will play pretty long after being tipped out for the pros this week. With that said, distance isn’t everything. Position off the tee will still be important, as will approach on a course where birdies will be necessary to contend.
Following two straight events with under 80 golfers, the field stretches to 132 players. Sure, there’s more competition but that also opens up more betting options for matchups and finishing position.
The truth is that even though everyone is trying to win every time they tee it up, most of the bigger names in this field will just be looking to get their game right for Augusta, and we will look outside the box for outright options this week. Consider the following for you Houston Open betting predictions:
The 2019-20 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year grew up in Dallas and attended college in Austin at the University of Texas, so here is another native of the area who we believe could enjoy a bit of a homecoming as he gears up for his first Masters. Like Ancer, it’s not only Scheffler’s roots that make him an interesting play this week.
When we talk about players who are capable of gaining strokes off the tee and on approach along with guys who can shred Par 5s without giving those scores back on the Par 4 holes, Scheffler needs to be on the list. As we saw with Sungjae Im a year ago, maintaining the level of play through the sophomore season after winning ROTY can be difficult, but Scheffler showed some serious signs of life while finishing T-17 at the Zozo Championship.
While there are some big names in this event, there are still a few missing in the lead-up to The Masters. This has put Finau near the very top of the odds board, even ahead of guys like Brooks Koepka and Hideki Matsuyama. While some will look at those high expectations and go another direction, we are taking what the oddsmakers are giving us.
Finau is a player who is a great option for a wide-open Memorial Park that doesn’t penalize bombers too heavily. He’s got one of the best tee-to-green games on tour and has flashed some prodigious iron play so far this season. Finau is a known destroyer of Par 5s and his form is excellent, having finished T-8th at the US Open and T-11th in his only other event at the Zozo Championship. DraftKings has a ton of finishing position odds and Finau is currently available at +225 for the top 10, which we are willing to take a shot with.
Sitting about a dozen spots down the odds board is Sungjae Im, who fans are getting to know quite well since he doesn’t take all that many weeks off. Not only is Sungjae one of the top up-and-coming players in the game, but his style of play actually suits Memorial Park pretty well.
The South Korea native ranked 14th on tour at birdie or better percentage on Par 5s a season ago and so far this season, we’ve seen huge improvements in his approach and off-the-tee game. Sungjae is also known for being extremely aggressive in his pursuit of the flagstick (something Presidents Cup teammate Abraham Ancer noted) and that helped him to a top 20 finish at the US Open this year, where he impressively finished 10th in approach.
We will continue to add and update selections until players tee off on Thursday, so check back throughout the week once all of the 2020 Houston Open odds are posted!
