2020 PLAYERS Championship Predictions - Golf Picks For TPC Sawgrass

2020 PLAYERS Championship Predictions - Golf Picks For TPC Sawgrass

The annual Florida swing of the PGA Tour has reached its most important destination in Ponte Vedra Beach, and we're celebrating the arrival of the golf season's biggest events with some 2020 Players Championship betting predictions!
This is the week that normally marks the beginning of the countdown to Augusta and The Masters, so now is when casual bettors start paying more attention to the PGA Tour. Below, we'll go preview the action, through the odds and make picks for the upcoming event.

Players Championship Betting Preview - Golf Betting Tips This Week

THE PLAYERS takes place from March 12-15, 2020 in Ponte Vedra Beach at TPC Sawgrass, a world-renowned track also known as 'The Stadium Course', which is positioned between the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean. The championship has its name for a reason and it's safe to say that golfers really do care about it. It is not one of the four major tournaments but if there was an election for a fifth to join the Mount Rushmore of yearly golf events, it would be this one.

This event has no exemptions for amateurs, club professionals or qualifiers, which means the 144-player field is packed with the best golfers in the world for the deepest and best group we see on tour all year. It also doles out $15 million in total, which is the highest purse on tour.

As is the case with all PGA Tour events, the first step to predicting success in a tournament is making sure the golfers you're looking at are a match for the course. This tends to be more important at this event than other tournaments because, like The Masters, this one is played at the same venue every year. Keep the following statistics in mind when deciding on 2020 Players Championship picks at NJ betting sites:

  • Strokes Gained: Approach
  • Strokes Gained: Putting
  • Strokes Gained: Around-The-Green
  • Scrambling
  • Par 5 Scoring

2020 Players Championship Outright Winner Picks

  • Jon Rahm (+1100)

Rahm is not only one of the highest-ranked golfers in the world but he's also finished no worse than 10th in five of his six starts this season. His last eight starts feature two wins, two runner-up finishes, and three top 10s, so this is the guy to target. He fits the statistical profile as a ball-striker who kills Par 5s, gains tons of strokes tee-to-green, and is one of the very best putters on the planet.

The Spaniard suffered a famous meltdown on Sunday last year that cost him a shot at winning the trophy as he finished T-12th, but he still was in control for more than three days. Here's to learning from our mistakes and exercising some demons as we take the No. 2 on the odds board for the first oof out 2020 Players Championship betting picks.

The first two days will be especially electric as Rahm is grouped with two four-time major winners in Rory McIlroy and Brooks Koepka, the former being last year's champion at Sawgrass.

  • Webb Simpson (+3300)

We have no idea why Webb Simpson is all the way up at +3300 but we are glad to see it, and this may be the best outright winner value on the entire board. Simpson is in form, has a great history here, and fits the profile of someone ready to tear TPC Sawgrass apart.

Simpson won wire-to-wire here in 2018, taking the trophy by four strokes after shooting 66 and 63 in the first two rounds. He's only made five starts this season but Simpson has four top-10 finishes and ranks very high in SG: Tee-to-Green, SG: Approach, SG: Putting, Scrambling, and Par-5 scoring.

Players Championship Picks 2020 - Finishing Position Bets

Selecting outright winners for any PGA Tour event is difficult but it may be tougher at THE PLAYERS than most due to the strength of the field. We highly recommend looking at the finishing positions markets for your Players Championship betting picks and don't be afraid to dig deep into the leaderboard to find potentially easy wins with modest odds.

  • Rory McIlroy Top 10 Finish (+110)

There is no player on planet Earth in better form and it really began at this event last year, which McIlroy won. It's not an overstatement to say McIlroy is a threat to win every week, evidenced by 14 top 10s and three wins last year.

Check the stats and see just how dominant McIlroy is. He leads the tour in par-5 scoring and scrambling, ranks second tee-to-green, and third on approach. But because he's favored by so much and there are so many good players in the field this week, we like his chances to land in the top 10 rather than chasing the outright victory.

In six starts this season, McIlroy has no finish worth than T-5th and he obviously knows this course extremely well having played this event so many times. In addition to winning last year, he's got a T-12th in 2016 and a T-8th in 2015.

  • Webb Simpson Top 20 Finish (+175)

We think Webb Simpson has shot to win this thing, so this Top 20 wager may be our favorite of the whole week. He's pretty comfortable here as we can tell by his last three performances at Sawgrass: T-16, 1st, T-16th. His dominance in the most important stats just solidifies the thought that he puts together another big week and since other well-known sites have this exact same market as low as +110, these odds are incredibly valuable.

  • Hideki Matsuyama Top 20 Finish (+138)

Matsuyama continues to be one of the very best players in the world and has the profile to hang at Sawgrass, where he was T-7th in 2016, T-22 in 2017, and T-8th in 2019. With his strong showing this season in SG: Tee-To-Green, SG: Approach, and Par-5 scoring, you never can take your eyes off Matsuyama and we just love the +138 line.

  • Collin Morikawa Top 30 (+138)

It's not every tournament that rookies stand out, especially in aa field like this one, but Morikawa is no ordinary rookie. He's yet to miss a cut in his career including 11 tournaments this year, finishing inside the top 30 on eight occasions. He's coming off a top 10 last week at Bay Hill and stands out in several important categories including SG: Tee-To-Green, SG: Approach.

  • Sungjae Im Top 30 Finish (-110)

We'll venture to say that no player on tour this season with the exception of world No. 1 Rory McIlroy has been as consistent as 21-year old Sungjae Im. The 2019 PGA Tour Rookie Of The Year followed up his first career win at the Honda Classic with a third-place finish at Bay Hill. He's got 13 cuts in 14 events, five top 10s, and nine finishes inside the top 30 so even if he's fatigued playing for the sixth week in a row, we think Sungjae can manage that once again given his current form and statistical profile.

  • Abraham Ancer Top 40 Finish (+120)

Ancer has only made one start at TPC Sawgrass but things went well as he managed a T-12th finish last year, which excites us for this week. If he makes the cut, we like him to repeat his strong result from 2019 and finish inside the top 40.

With all the sand and water around this course, players who can scramble a bit are valuable and Ancer is one of the best. He also does pretty well in SG: Tee-To-Green. We are playing it a bit safe with a star-studded field and going only top 40, but we are still getting plus-money with a great up-and-coming talent.

2020 Players Championship Best Bets

  • Jon Rahm Outright Winner (+1100)
  • Webb Simpson Outright Winner (+3300)
  • Rory McIlroy Top 10 Finish (+110)
  • Webb Simpson Top 20 Finish (+175)
  • Hideki Matsuyama Top 20 Finish (+138)
  • Collin Morikawa Top 30 Finish (+138)
  • Sungjae Im Top 30 Finish (-110)
  • Abraham Ancer Top 40 Finish (+120)

There are tons of betting options with so many upper-echelon golfers packed into one field, but the above eight vets are our favorite to lock in by the time the pros arrive for THE PLAYERS at TPC Sawgrass, located at 110 Championship Way, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL 32082.
