The PGA Tour is heading to the midwest and Detroit, Michigan to play the fourth event since the extended break, and we’re providing bettors with some 2020 Rocket Mortgage Classic predictions!
This event is taking place for just the second year at Detroit Golf Club (DGC) after being established in 2019. Originally scheduled for late May shortly after the PGA Championship, it will now take place from July 2-5 as the fourth event back.
The previous three events saw fields much stronger than usual after the long layoff, but it appears some big names will be taking an event off and the overall group will be a bit weaker this week.
With golf being one of the only sports currently in action in the United States, each PGA Tour event has been seeing a huge amount of action at online sportsbooks in New Jersey and several other states where wagering is legal, regardless of who is in the field.
Here, we’ll preview the track at Detroit Golf Club and provide some 2020 Rocket Mortgage Classic betting picks for the upcoming week!
Before committing any money to Rocket Mortgage betting picks, it’s important to be educated on several things including the layout of the course and any key stats to consider.
After three short courses in a row, the PGA Tour returns to a bit of a lengthier track at DGC, where it measures over 7,300 yards and par is 72. The course is pretty balanced between short and long Par-4s and Par-5s, but the fairways are thin and lined with trees with bunkers are all over the property.
Figuring out exactly which stats apply best to DGC is a bit of a guessing game with only one tournament worth of history here, but having some characteristics in common with TPC River Highlands (Travelers Championship) should make things a bit easier.
Here are some Detroit Golf Club key stats we landed on:
It seems the quality of play off the tee and out of the sand around the greens will be what separates the field this week. Half of the Par 4s at last year’s event were under 400 yards, making short approaches and performances on those types of holes vital.
With hot and dry conditions expected, putting on the poa annua and bentgrass greens will be key as well. This event saw quite a scoring barrage in its first edition, as Nate Lashley shot -25 to take the prize by six strokes, and the field should be much stronger this time around. Without being able to look back at the history of the event and how players perform on this course historically, this is definitely a week where bettors are going in a little blind. The good news is that the oddsmakers are doing the same thing.
Detroit Golf Club is definitely a bit longer than the tracks we’ve seen on tour the past few weeks, but there’s also a chance some distance is neutralized by the high rough and thin tree-lined fairways. The lesson is, don’t eliminate any golfers based on style of play alone this week.

Once your account is all set up, consider the following when making 2020 Rocket Mortgage Classic predictions:
In just his second PGA Tour start, Hovland shot -15 and finished tied for 13th place at the first edition of this event last year, so we’re weighing that history more heavily than the season-long statistics.
Recently, Hovland has improved in the areas that will lead to success again at DGC. He’s gone top-15 in Strokes Gained: Tee-To-Green two weeks in a row and has improved with putting and short Par 4s.
It doesn’t hurt that he finished T-11th at the Travelers and played well on a course that is supposed to compare well, and that’s with an awful putting week. Hovland ranked third in SG: Approach and led the field in SG: Tee-To-Green.
He’s one of the favorites in a field that isn’t as stacked as previous weeks but he’s still playing well and has decent odds, so take a look at Hovland for one of your Rocket Mortgage Classic 2020 picks, but shop around to possibly grab the young Norwegian at +2200.
Finau is still looking for his first win on tour but he’s still capable of climbing almost any leaderboard and we’re willing to bet he does just that this week in Detroit. He’s never played an event at this course but he does have a top-10 finish at Firestone and TPC River Highlands, two good course comparisons, and Bet MGM has good value on Finau compared to other sites at +2800.
Despite being a noted big hitter, Finau has managed his way around smaller courses the past few weeks and impressed in many ways more than just his driver. He ranks second this season in Par 4 Efficiency between 350 and 400 yards and has been excellent on short approaches, two important areas this week.
After an early exit from the Travelers and the field for this week not being quite as strong, give Finau a look. And if you’re not on board with an outright selection, he’s as high as +170 for a top 20 and +100 for a top 30.
Aside from selecting outright winners, the most lucrative way to go about making golf betting picks could be posting a good percentage on finishing position wagers.
It’s a great way to maintain a rooting interest throughout the week and collect winnings at the end, even if the lines are much more modest than nailing a pre-tournament winner.

There are plenty of sites with golf betting markets beyond outright winners, but few have as many golf markets as the industry’s biggest brands including FanDuel, which offers some of the most player-friendly odds for finishing positions. Sign Up To Claim A $500 Bet From FanDuel!
Think about some of the following golfers if making Rocket Mortgage Classic predictions picks on finishing position at Detroit Golf Club:
After missing the cut at the Charles Schwab and RBC Heritage, The Rocket Mortgage ambassador took a week off to prepare for the event, and we think that does him some good.
Frankly, there aren’t any statistics from this season to point at and be particularly confident in this week when it comes to Fowler with the exceptions of scrambling and efficiency on the short Par 4 holes. He is just so much better than his recent results and with a weaker field this week, he should finally be able to climb the leaderboard the way he’s capable of.
A lackluster weekend earned Fowler a 46th-place finish in last year’s event, but the fact that he’s played DGC is still a positive for betting purposes. With a slight improvement in putting and approach from last year’s event, Fowler should be competing this weekend.
Snedeker is a player with great history on Donald Ross-designed courses and tied for fifth place in this event last year. He’s one of the very best putters on tour, ranking 21st in strokes gained heading into the Travelers and is great around the greens, including in the sand. At last year’s event at DGC, Snedeker ranked fourth in scrambling and top-20 on Par 4 holes between 350 and 400 yards.
There’s some decent value on a player who successfully knocked off some rust after the long layoff, playing three of four rounds in the 60s at the Travelers.
Poston already has nine finishes inside the top 30 this season and we think he adds another one at DGC, where he tied for 11th in last year’s event.
Like Snedeker, Poston has excelled this season with the putter and around the greens, including getting up and down from bunkers. Heading into the Travelers, Poston ranked eighth in strokes gained with the putter and in last year’s Rocket Mortgage Classic, he ranked eighth in approach.

Below are two 2020 Rocket Mortgage Classic Matchup Picks:
Sabbatini is a veteran who notched a T-3rd here last year and was able to card a T-14 and T-21 in the first two events coming out of the break, two of his best results this season. He led the field in fairways hit and Par-5 scoring a year ago and appears primed for another decent outing, but so is J.T. Postin.
We mentioned above the type of season that Poston is having with his irons and his putter, which has led to nine finishes inside the top 30 already. Poston went top 10 in each of the first two events back before missing the cut at the Travelers, and we think he gets back on track with a slight win over Sabbatini after both performed really well here last year.
Doc Redman parlayed a special exemption at this event last year into a second-place finish and earning his PGA Tour card for this year, so we know Detroit Golf Club is a special place for him. Redman also finished T-21st and T-11th in each of the last two events, playing the last seven rounds in the 60s. He ranks top 20 in SG: Approach and even though he struggles with the flat stick, he was 11th in SG: Putting at last year’s event.
HVIII is coming off a pretty strong showing at the Travelers but is playing in a two-on-two charity event on Wednesday, which may not give him the normal practice routine that players normally go through before a tournament. While it may not play a role, that combined with Redman’s profile here has us taking the Doc.
We will continue to add and update selections until players tee off on Thursday, so check back throughout the week once all of the 2020 Rocket Mortgage Classic betting odds are posted!
