Normally, the US Open is played during the summer amid a cluster of huge events as the season winds down. But before things seemingly get back to normal in 2021, the revised schedule meant pushing the 2020 event until later in the calendar year and into the new season.
The Safeway Open began the new golf year and the 2020 US Open will take place from September 17-20 at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, New York as the second event of the season.
Winged Foot measures just over 7,200 yards and Plays to a Par 70, meaning there are just two Par-5 holes on the course. There is no water at Winged Foot but there are hellish greens, plenty of dog legs and tree-lined fairways, and a number of well-placed bunkers to deal with.
Here are some US Open key stats to keep in mind:

Winged Foot is a world-famous track (it opened in 1923 and hosted the 1929 US Open along with four more in the 90 years since) and any event played there is undoubtedly prestigious, this year’s tournament being no exception.
The weather and course conditions will be somewhat different than the summer months, but that will be part of the intrigue that these late-year majors will bring. Approach play is universally important on the PGA Tour but based on the notorious difficulty of these greens, summer or fall, putting is going to be huge as well.
Distance will always count for something, but irons and putters can normally overcome a deficiency in yardage. Especially once you consider that this is a major, and the course is unlikely to yield easy birdies simply due to distance off the tee.
Take all the factors of this unusual event into account and when you’re ready to bet, consider the following 2020 US Open golf picks:
The 2019 PGA Tour Player of the Year has not played particularly well since the restart; fatherhood was approaching at the same time the fans were missing, and Rory’s game suffered.
The fans aren’t back to provide the energy McIlroy misses but following the birth of his daughter, there’s at least a load off his mind mentally. After a couple of extra weeks at home, he four-time major champ should be fresh as he starts the new season with a major.
He’ll need the 2019 putter to return but the tee-to-green and approach game is still strong, and that will play well at Winged Foot. It is pretty rare to gain huge amounts of values with the very best players in the world, but that is the case with McIlroy here, as he was in the +800 range a couple of months back and is now at +1400.
When it comes to majors, you can never overlook Schauffele and he definitely has the goods for Winged Foot.
Xander ranked in the top five in strokes gained during the 2019-20 season and the overall tee-to-green game is helped along by strong iron play and great putting, which is all part of the recipe at this US Open. He’s also one of the best ball strikers there is and he ranked top five in bogey avoidance, another huge measure for major success.
He’s among the favorites but Schauffele at +1600 is a great play to stay in contention long into the weekend, as he often does at these events. He’s finished T-20th or better in seven of the 12 major he’s played in his career, which makes him worth a finishing position wager.
If you’re looking down the odds board for a capable player with decent odds, the 2018 Masters champion could be your guy. We’ve seen Reed perform on enough big stages by now, and the statistical profile is definitely a fit, even if he’s not everyone’s favorite to root for.
Over the course of the season that just ended, Reed finished 12th in SG: Putting, 21st in Scrambling, 26th in SG: Tee-To-Green, and 31st in Bogey Avoidance. The overall resume here tells us Reed can handle Winged Foot no matter the conditions, physically and mentally. This course is going to be an absolute grind, and Reed is the type of player that can hold a round together when things get tough.
Unlike the two most recent playoff events that just wrapped up, this is a large-field similar to the conventional tournaments we see throughout the season. There are 144 golfers in the field, and that can make picking an outright winner extremely tough.
That’s why we love finishing position wagers. The odds are modest in comparison, but there is a greater margin for error and a better chance of finishing the weekend as a winner. Besides, the lines are still good enough to be profitable.
We think the following golfers could be worth including as one of your US Open betting picks:
Although Sungjae did rank 25th in total strokes gained, there aren’t many eye-popping stats to speak of from last season. The hope is that as the 2019 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year makes his 2020-21 debut, there is a return to form following a little bit of a post-restart slump after winning shortly before the pandemic hit. He hasn’t had the easiest time of it since the restart but looks to have found something at the TOUR Championship, where he placed 11th
Following his play in one of the biggest events of the season, it’s becoming increasingly obvious that Sungjae is unflappable on the course. He unphased by the difficulty of Winged Foot and when a score of even is considered a good day, Im is the type of player we could find grinding out pars and staying in the mix.
The 2019 US Open winner looks to make it two in a row at Winged Foot and even if he isn’t able to win back-to-back trophies, Woodland has all the goods to take a run at the upper part of the leaderboard as he celebrates the week as reigning champion.
Woodland’s post-restart season was definitely one to forget, but there will be nobody more refreshed and ready to go heading into this week than the defending champion. When it comes to the statistical profile, Woodland is also a decent fit. Even in a disappointing 2020 season, Woodland managed to rank 38th in Strokes Gained: Putting, 35th in Bogey Avoidance, 34th in Ball Striking, and 10th in Strokes Gained: Approach.
To us, that resume adds up to a decent week at Winged Foot and someone to consider for your US Open golf picks if looking at finishing position into the top 30 or 40, which can still pull in a plus-money return.
We will continue to add and update selections until players tee off on Thursday, so check back throughout the week once all of the 2020 US Open betting odds are posted!
