Despite being on the road in Week 17, San Francisco is more than a field-goal favorite at SugarHouse NJ going into the final game on the Sunday Night Football schedule. The line has ballooned to Niners -3.5 (-110) after opening with a smaller spread at some online sportsbooks.
Regardless of the odds, there could not be more at stake for either team going into the final game of the season.
In this case, it so happens the Week 17 NFL schedule saved the best for last. A couple of months back when San Francisco opened 8-0, many did not figure the NFC West would be up for grabs until the very end. Now, thee 49ers head into Seattle needing a win to secure the division and the top overall seed in the NFL side of the 2020 NFL playoff bracket.
The silver lining for the loser of this game is that there’s no danger in missing the postseason. Whichever team is on the short end in Week 17 will likely wind up as the No. 5 seed and going on the road, although it will be a trip to either Philadelphia or Dallas for a winnable game during Wild Card weekend.
The Eagles are the ones in control, and a win over the Giants will secure Philadelphia’s seed at No. 4 as the NFC East winner while an Eagles loss and a Cowboys win means Dallas would take over that spot.
On the surface, it’s easy to see why so much of the action is on San Francisco. The 49ers 12-3 and currently the No. 1 overall seed in the NFC. This team did already lose to the Seahawks at home in Week 10, but the circumstances aren’t all the same.
After season-ending injuries to Chris Carson, Rashaad Penny, and, the Seahawks are down to their fourth-strong running back and the newly re-added Marshawn Lynch. Considering Seattle relies on the run game and San Francisco is an imposing defensive unit, the optics of the matchup aren’t great.
Can Russell Wilson overcome all of this, virtually by himself? Maybe not, but we don’t expect Seattle to be blown out at home with the division on the line, either.
San Francisco is a healthier, more well-rounded team than its NFC West counterpart, so it’s easy to imagine the Niners going on the road and taking control of a division title that appeared to be theirs all along. But because of Wilson and this game being in Seattle, though, it should be closely fought.;
The overwhelming public support for the road team has pushed this line to the point where the value is now on the other side. Even though the world is picking the 49ers, consider fading the public and picking Seattle to cover for your Week 17 NFL picks to close the regular season.
