No. 1 Alabama and No. 2 Clemson clash for the third time in the national championship game, with each having defeated the other previously. In 2016, it was the Crimson Tide taking down the Tigers to win the title and the next season, it was Clemson taking home the trophy. Last year, Alabama defeated the Tigers in the national semifinals, then reclaimed the championship with a win over SEC-rival Georgia. The upcoming matchup with actually be the fourth in four seasons between the two teams in the College Football Playoff.
No. 1 Alabama (-5.5) vs. No. 2 Clemson - Monday, Jan. 7
888 Sportsbook NJ has Alabama as 5.5-point favorites over Clemson in the upcoming national championship game.
The Alabama Crimson Tide became the first team in over 100 years to beat all regular-season opponent by more than 20 points. The streak was ended in an SEC championship as backup QB Jalen Hurts’ heroics saved them, but Alabama ended up here all the same. The Crimson Tide’s 11-point win over Oklahoma wasn’t as close as the score made it seem, and if any team is going to give Clemson’s stud freshman QB Trevor Lawrence issues, it’s Alabama, which makes its fifth appearance in the College Football Playoff. Led by Heisman Trophy finalist Tua Tagovailoa and a top-flight defense, Alabama is still regarded as the most complete team in the nation.
Clemson overcame some quarterback uncertainty early in the season, losing their starter before settling on the freshman Lawrence before conference play started. Behind a well-oiled offense and the top scoring defense in the nation, the Tigers rolled through the ACC, winning by an average of almost 40 points following Lawrence being the starter. Clemson was supposed to be challenged by Notre Dame, whom they dominated like every other team they’ve met over the last three months. It has become clear once again that the Tigers are the only group who truly belong on the field with Alabama in this game.
The Pick: Alabama Crimson Tide (-5.5)
At no point this season has Trevor Lawrence looked like a freshman. He absolutely picked apart the Irish for the tune of 327 yards and three touchdowns in a 30-3 win. However, Alabama is an enormous step up from Notre Dame and I think they rattle the young QB for the first time in his college career. Clemson is still missing three players (including a star on defense) for drug-test violations and the void will show on their defensive line when trying to block the Crimson Tide. Tua Tagovailoa completed 24-of-27 passes for 318 yards and four scores of his own in the semifinals and even if Monday isn’t quite so dominant, he shouldn’t have trouble putting up points. Alabama wears down Clemson and makes the freshman look like one as Tagovailoa leads them to a second straight national title.
