CFP National Championship Preview: Can Clemson Stop LSU In New Orleans?

When the No. 1 LSU Tigers (14-0) and No. 3 Clemson Tigers (14-0) meet at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans on Monday evening, it will truly be a clash of college football titans. Currently, LSU can be found at either -6 or -5.5 at NJ betting sites, with the total set at 69 points.

Led by Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow, LSU destroyed Oklahoma in the semifinals by a 63-28 score in what was more of a mauling than a football game. Burrow tossed seven (yes, seven) touchdowns in the opening half to end any hopes the Sooners had as the nation’s best offense raised its scoring average to 48.9 points per game.

Part of Burrow’s success, of course, is due to the weapons around him. Four of those touchdowns (and 14 catches for 227 yards) went to wideout Justin Jefferson, who now has 102 receptions and 18 scores on the season. Top receiver Ja’Marr Chase had a quiet game, yet still has over 1,500 yards and 18 touchdowns. The list of threats for Clemson to cover goes on and on.

With that said, Dabo Swinney’s team has no slouch under center in Trevor Lawrence, who has proven himself to be one of the most dynamic players in college football. Following a slow start to the CFP semifinal game against Ohio State, Lawrence returned after taking a huge hit and led Clemson back from 16 points down to keep the dream at another national title alive.

Clemson also has some pretty gaudy offensive stats of its own, scoring 85 touchdowns and averaging 45.3 points per game (fourth in the country). On the other side of the ball, Clemson’s defense ranked No. 2 in yards per play (4.13) and allowed the fewest opponent touchdowns in the country.

So what happens when an unstoppable force like LSU’s offense meets an immovable object such as the Clemson defense?

CFP Title Game Predictions: LSU vs. Clemson Picks For NCAA Championship

Clemson proved that it’s deserving of its third CFP title game in four seasons, but we feel like LSU has too many weapons to cover and won’t make the same mistakes that Ohio State did. Throw in the fact that this is a virtual home game in New Orleans for LSU, and they’ll feel right at home with the support inside the Superdome.

One of the reasons that Clemson was able to make that comeback was because its defense forced field goals in situations where the Buckeyes probably should have scored touchdowns. On three of four occasions, the Clemson defense allowed three instead of seven.

In order to beat LSU, Clemson will likely once again have to come up big in the red zone, but that’s where they could run into some issues. No team in the country had more red-zone scores than LSU, with 55 of the 68 being touchdowns.

Thanks to a prolific offense headed by Burrow, LSU scores enough to hand Lawrence his first collegiate loss as Ed Orgeron’s team wins a national title by a touchdown.

Clemson vs. LSU Predictions: Best CFP Championship Prop Bets

Since the CFP title game is basically the Super Bowl of college football, it only makes sense that prop betting is extremely popular during the championship.

Sportsbooks are aware that with only one game on, betting options are limited. So like the Super Bowl, additional prop markets are added to accommodate bettors of all kinds with a wider variety of options. Below are several suggestions for Clemson vs. LSU prop bets:

  • Length Of Longest TD Under 64.5 Yards (-110)
  • Thaddeus Moss Over 45.5 Receiving Yards (-110)
  • Total First Downs Over 54.5 (-110)
