DraftKings Sports Betting National Championship Crowns Winner Amid Dispute

NJ sports betting made history on Sunday night as the first DraftKings Sports Betting National Championship crowned a winner after the Saints defeated the Eagles to advance to the NFC title game. The winner was Randy Lee, a New Jersey poker dealer who played under the name “rleejr86.” Lee took home $1 million, plus the winnings in his bankroll, and the honor of being the first ever to win the DraftKings SBNC. But the event did end with some controversy at the DraftKings Sportsbook.

DraftKings SBNC Ends With Controversy

Rufus Peabody, a professional sports bettor, was leading the contest heading into the Eagles-Saints game. He compiled an $81,891.82 bankroll after making an all-in wager on the Patriots-Chargers game.

This left Peabody in great shape to win the championship, but there was a problem. The game ended at 4:37 pm, leaving just minutes before kickoff for the Eagles-Saints game. Normally, this would be more than enough time to make a sports bet, but Peabody’s account wasn’t being updated with the latest funds, which he would have used to make another all-in wager on the Eagles-Saints game. The game began with Peabody’s funds never updating, leaving the professional sports bettor to send out this tweet:

Peabody had a sports betting decision to make for the Eagles-Saints game, but was never given the chance. And apparently, he isn’t the only contestant who didn’t receive their funds in time to place their final bets. According to Peabody’s Twitter account, at least three other top-seven finishers were unable to place bets before the start of the Eagles-Saints game.

The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement said it would review the incident.

DraftKings SBNC Still A Success Despite Mishaps

Despite the controversial ending, Peabody expressed enjoying the Sports Betting National Championship format. And DraftKings Sportsbook has stated they will look into making tweaks for next year’s event.

The DraftKings Sports Betting National Championship was the first of its kind since the Supreme Court ruling in May of 2018 that authorized legal sports betting. The contest had 260 participants with $2.5 million in guaranteed money paid out. Peabody took home $250,000 for his efforts, plus the additional $81,891.82. So despite the controversy, not a bad day.

Though participants could play anywhere in New Jersey, the event was held in Jersey City at a specially-made DraftKings Sportsbook. was held in a nondescript building in Jersey City. The venue laid out tables, couches and chairs in front of dozens of televisions to go along with two open bars. Add in some strobe lights and everyone was set up to have a good time. Players couldn’t enter live bets, but instead, had to place their bets through the DraftKings app.

DraftKings has stated they will be fine-tuning the event for next year, so look for an improved experienced with an even larger player pool as US sports betting grows.
