Minnesota Twins (-108) @ Seattle Mariners
The first of our MLB picks today is the American League Central-leading Twins on the road in Seattle. Sharp bettors are all over the Twins at nearly even-money on the road, and that may have to do with the pitching matchup.
Twins starter Martin Perez has spurred a resurrection of sorts, revamping his repertoire to positive results, which has led to many more strikeouts and less contact being made by hitters. Perez decreased his four-seam fastball usage in favor of a cutter, which he now throws over 30 percent of the time. That said, Perez’s four-seamer has also ticked in velocity by nearly 2 mph to 94.5, while the cutter comes in around 88-89 mph. This newfound deception partly accounts for the lefty’s 24 percent strikeout rate in 2019 despite having a career mark of 14.5 percent.
Perez’s recent success and the depth of the Twins’ lineup has us taking Minnesota on the FanDuel Sportsbook app today.
Pick: Minnesota Twins (-108 on FanDuel Sportsbook)
Houston Astros (-132) @ Red Sox
As if the Astros’ eight-game win streak isn’t impressive enough, the AL West leader has put up double-digit runs in four of five games. We think they make it nine in a row, so Houston is our second MLB pick today using FanDuel Sportsbook odds.
Betting against the Red Sox at Fenway, especially giving away juice, never feels good. The sharp bettors, however, are on the road team and the opposition is part of that reason. Rick Porcello is on the mound for Boston, and Houston smashes right-handed pitching. They lead MLB with a .504 SLG and .851 OPS against RHPs. This team also has a higher weighted on-base average than any offense in baseball, and with Gerrit Cole on the hill, this feels like the right time to fade Boston.
Cole’s surface numbers aren’t the prettiest, but his strikeout rate is up and his walk rate is down. Trust he will get the long ball under control and make the MLB pick today on Houston.
Pick: Houston Astros (-133 on FanDuel Sportsbook)

Washington Nationals (-160) vs. Cubs
Less value on Washington than we’d like, but we are trusting in Scherzer. The right-hander’s drastically increased ground-ball rate could be part of why more balls in play have resulted in hits so far this season, as he currently holds a .361 BABIP (league average is .289). And he is also posting a would-be career best 2.25 FIP to this point. The Nationals’ lineup does well enough against LHP to warrant going against Cole Hamels on the road.
Rockies/Phillies Over 9 (-116)
Rockies are top 10 in OPS vs. lefties this season, and Cole Irvin has only made one career start. Colorado chips away for a few runs, while the Phils do the same against Jon Gray.
St. Louis Cardinals -1.5 (-102)
Jose Leclerc has gone from failed closer to opener for Texas. Who knows how this will work between he and Adrian Sampson (he’ll enter after Leclerc), but we are siding with the Cardinals to take advantage of the hitter-friendly confines with Miles Mikolas on the bump.
