“An innovative take on live sports betting, with some of the first self-service betting kiosks in Atlantic City.”
This is how Golden Nugget Online Casino, one of the more popular NJ online casinos, described their recent launch sportsbook, conveniently called The Sportsbook. And if one were to take a virtual tour of the location via the Golden Nugget’s Facebook page, you’d be hard-pressed to disagree.
The Sportsbook, using tech supplied by SB Tech, is rather well fitted-out and features 5 TV walls and over 50 HD TV screens. It also houses 9 betting kiosks, 4 cashiers, 16 comfortable lounge chairs and seating for 100.
Golden Nugget Online Casino’s The Sportsbook opened on a Friday and ran from 5 pm all the way to 12 am. But fear not, its regular opening time is 10 am and will still close at midnight.
Despite being just minutes away from missing the DGE’s deadline, which they had already informed all participants (including all of the NJ online casinos) of back in June of this year, Golden Nugget Online Casino managed to score a pass in into the still shiny NJ sports betting market.
Before the official home of The Sportsbook was completed, The Sportsbook had a temporary home for 2 weeks in what used to be the poker room of the Golden Nugget.
In a conversation held with Associated Press Tom Pohlman, Vice President of Golden Nugget broke the news that they had applied for both on-site and online sports betting.
There were legitimate fears that The Sportsbook would never see the light of day before sports betting had been officially legalized in New Jersey. This was due to a previous version of the Sports Betting bill that excluded and casino operator from sports betting if hey owned an interest in a team that bets could be placed on due to conflict of interests.
Thankfully, the bill was altered so that it would only exclude those who more than a 10% share in the team from offering bets on sports events.
Hopes for The Sportsbook were nearly dashed before legalized sports betting was even approved in the Garden State.
This amendment meant that Tilman Fertitta could hold on to his share the Houston Rockets of the NBA and his casino could take part in what is looking set to become very active sports betting market in the Garden State.
