Explaining The Puck Line:
***FOR YOUR INFORMATION: When it comes to picking sides in hockey, there are two types of ways to bet. Puck Line (PL) betting means that you are not only wagering on a team to win the game, since that is what betting on the money line (ML) is. The puck line is a 1.5-goal spread that does one of two things: it can give the underdog some cushion at +1.5 goals or forces a favorite to win by at least two goals at -1.5 in order to cash a victory on the wager.
The payouts for this type of bet really depend on which side you pick. Selecting a team that must win by two goals (-1.5) creates much higher odds, and wagering a team on the other side (+1.5) lowers odds. Many times, the difference between a win or a loss in these types of wagers comes down to the making or missing of an empty-net tally while the score is within one goal late in the contest.
PUCK LINE EXAMPLE: Let’s say the Tampa Bay Lightning are -200 on the money line, but +140 on the puck line. This means one would have to wager $200 for every $100 on the Lightning securing a win by any amount. On the puck line, since Tampa Bay must win by two or more (-1.5), the payout is higher odds at +140. This means that a $100 wager on a victory by 2+ goal would pay $140. These rules remain true no matter the exact teams or odds. ***

NHL Betting Picks: Top Plays Of The Day
Calgary Flames [-1.5 (+185), -139 ML] @ Florida Panthers [+1.5 (-235), +116 ML] - 7pm
This feels like one of those games where it’s important to not overthink it too much and just take the better team to win the game. Calgary rightfully enters Thursday’s matchup as road favorites over the Panthers, according to 888 Sportsbook. The Flames have lost three in a row, but are one of the best teams in the Western Conference while the Panthers are now under .500 and has less and less to play for each night. The Flames are 8-3 in their last 11 contests as a road favorite, so give me the better team at a reasonable price against a goaltender in James Reimer who has struggled all season long.
Pick: Calgary Flames -139
Colorado Avalanche [+1.5 (-177), +150 ML] @ Winnipeg Jets [-1.5 (+140), -182 ML] - 8:30pm
The Central Division-leading Winnipeg Jets host Colorado as heavy favorites, according to the 888sport app. The line makes sense, as the Jets are one of the top home teams in the NHL (21-6-2 this season) and Colorado has lost its last 7 trips to Winnipeg. The favorite has won the last four meetings between these two teams and the home team is 21-6 in the last 27 meetings between these two teams. It’s hard to see this one going differently, but take the Jets to grab that extra goal to strengthen your payout.
Pick: Winnipeg Jets -1.5 (+140)
New York Islanders @ Columbus Blue Jackets (Over/Under 5.5 goals)
Picking unders in today’s NHL can be scary with the way goals are filling the back of the net. With that said, sometimes it’s necessary to pick a spot based on the teams we have in front of us. Columbus and the Islanders are similar groups that are equally matched, and that could make for a low-scoring game that stays under the 5.5-goal mark set by 888 Online Sportsbook’s hockey lines. Columbus is a strong offensive team, but the Islanders allow the least amount of goals in the league and boast a very strong goaltending tandem. At home with a strong goalie of their own, I see the Blue Jackets keeping the Islanders from scoring a ton as well. This one has the makings of a 3-2 game.
Pick: Islanders/Blue Jackets under 5.5
NHL Betting Pick: Underdog Play of the Day
Toronto Maple Leafs [+1.5 (-250), +106 ML] @ Vegas Golden Knights [-1.5 (+195), -125 ML]- 10pm
In a clash of two probable playoff teams, Toronto visits Vegas as a slight underdog, according to 888sport. Not only have the Maple Leafs won five of six, they’ve won five straight road games against teams with winning record at home. Vegas is one of the toughest venues to play at in the NHL, but Toronto is 18-7-2 on the road in total this year and we are taking a shot with them to hand the Golden Knights a second straight home loss.
Pick: Toronto Maple Leafs +106
Best of luck!
