Popular NCAA Tournament Championship Predictions On DraftKings Sportsbook

NJ sports betting is still going through its first calendar year and experiencing all the boosts that major events can have on the industry. NJ oddsmakers like DraftKings Sportsbook can attest that events like the NFL season (specifically the Super Bowl), World Series, mixed martial arts and boxing among other things are all events that produce heavy NJ sports betting participation and revenue. We could find out soon that March Madness and the NCAA Tournament is no different, and it may actually be the biggest boom of all.

Once the full 2019 NCAA Tournament bracket was released on Selection Sunday, online sports betting players wasted no time flocking to various NJ online sportsbooks in order to make their March Madness predictions. One of the most popular types of bets is called futures, which in this case are generally bets made ahead of time on which team will win the national championship.

If you want a further breakdown of each NCAA Tournament region, click each below:

The following teams immediately saw the most futures betting action on the DraftKings Sportsbook app after the release of the 68-team field:

  • Duke
  • North Carolina
  • Michigan State
  • Gonzaga
  • Villanova

NJ Online Sports Betting Players Love Duke On DraftKings Sportsbook

The Duke Blue Devils are the favorite of both oddsmakers and NJ online sports betting players from the very beginning on the DraftKing Sportsbook app. The list below details the most popular teams in terms of total wagers and percentage of the handle following the release of the bracket on Selection Sunday.

*Statistics for evening of Sunday 3/17 following bracket release

Not only did bettors make the most NCAAB predictions on Duke to win the NCAA Tournament at 13 percent, but an incredible amount of the total money bet came in on the Blue Devils as well. On the first night of legal NJ sports wagering on the March Madness champion, Duke saw a staggering 33 percent of the total money bet. The next highest handle was Gonzaga at 10 percent, far below the No. 1 overall seeded Blue Devils seeing one-third of the handle.

These percentages tell us that NJ online sports betting players have huge amounts of confidence in Mike Krzyzewski’s team. Being the odds-on favorite, Duke’s odds are by far the lowest of any team at +225. In order to create a higher profit margin, bettors are placing high amounts of money on the favorite, as opposed to smaller amounts of money on an underdog team.

North Carolina Sees Second-Most Action For NCAAB Predictions On DraftKings Sportsbook

North Carolina seemed to fly a bit under the radar because of Duke and Virginia, but NJ online sports betting players once again have the Tar Heels rightly at the front of their minds. UNC beat Duke twice while going 16-2 inside the conference and matched the Blue Devils blow-for-blow in the ACC Tournament.

As a result, North Carolina has been extremely popular, seeing slightly less bets than Duke at 12 percent. With far more favorable odds than Duke at +750 on DraftKings Sportsbook, North Carolina backers haven’t needed to lay down as much money to make a strong profit. For that reason, the Tar Heels have only seen eight percent of the money.

Getting through a potential matchup with Kentucky won’t be easy, but that feels like the only thing keeping North Carolina from the Final Four. North Carolina is an offensive powerhouse with a mix of young talent and NCAA Tournament experience to go with a Hall-of-Fame coach. If they do reach Minneapolis, we’ll be dreaming of a fourth matchup between the Tar Heels and Blue Devils, with sports betting players that took UNC having a huge payout on the line.

Michigan State, Gonzaga And Villanova Also Popular March Madness Picks On Selection Sunday

Defending-champion Villanova, Big Ten champion Michigan State and No. 1 seed Gonzaga saw the third and fourth most  NCAA Tournament sports betting predictions on DraftKings Sportsbook.

No. 1 seed Gonzaga frequently boasts one of the best programs in the country, but has reached the Final Four just once. With that said, some believe this may be the best Bulldogs team that Mark Few has ever had, even though they were defeated in the WCC title game. With +600 odds and a possibly easier region than others, people are betting big on Gonzaga. On DraftKings, they saw just eight percent of tickets but 10 percent of the total money wagered by online sports betting players.

Michigan State defeated rival Michigan three times this season, including in the Big Ten title game. Coach Tom Izzo has a March Madness pedigree  and this year sees tons of sports betting action year after year. Even though they are stuck in Duke’s region, nine percent of the tickets and five percent of the money came in on the Spartans the evening of Selection Sunday. Currently, their +1600 odds are sixth best of any team in the field.

Despite winning the 2018 NCAA Tournament along with this year’s Big East regular season and conference tournament, Villanova is just a No. 6 seed and is not considered as dangerous as in past seasons. Still, Jay Wright’s team saw six percent of the bets and four  percent of the handle on the first night of legal NJ sports betting on the NCAA Tournament. The high payout of +3300 in addition to the geography of NJ to Philadelphia is likely part of that result.
