Puck Line Suggestions
***FOR YOUR INFORMATION: Puck Line (PL) betting in hockey means that you are not only wagering on a team to merely win the game, since that is what betting on the money line (ML) is. The puck line is a 1.5-goal spread that either gives the underdog some cushion on a loss, or forces a favorite to win by at least two goals in order to cash a victory on the wager. The odds for this type of bet correspond with which side you pick, as selecting a team that must win by two goals (-1.5) creates much better odds, and selecting a team on the other side (+1.5) worsens odds. Many times, a win or a loss in these types of bets comes down to the making or missing of an empty-net tally while the score is within one late in the contest.
PUCK LINE EXAMPLE: Let’s say the Capitals are -195 on the money line, but +135 on the puck line. This means one would have to wager $195 for every $100 on Washington securing a win. On the puck line, since Washington must win by two goals (-1.5), the payout is a much more robust +135. This means for a $100 wager on a two-goal victory, the bet would pay $135.***
Carolina Hurricanes [+1.5 (-143), +180 ML] @ Tampa Bay Lightning [-1.5 (+116), -225 ML] - 7:30pm
The NHL’s best team resides in Tampa Bay and they haven’t lost a home game since late November. The Lightning have won eight straight games in Tampa, improving their record to a dominant 18-4-0 on home ice this season. Carolina has played much better of late, winning five straight games. Still, can’t take them in this spot. The Bolts’ line isn’t too profitable, but there’s just too much firepower in Tampa Bay and I think they win by two yet again at Amalie Arena.
Pick: Tampa Bay Lightning -1.5
Toronto Maple Leafs [-1.5 (+135), -200 ML] @ New Jersey Devils [+1.5 (-175), +165 ML] - 7pm
This pick is a combination of taking the Maple Leafs and fading the Devils. The home team has dominated this head-to-head matchup of late, but New Jersey is struggling to score goals as well as defend them. Toronto brings into Newark an explosive offense and one of the best road records in the league at 14-5-1. The goaltending situation for the Maple Leafs is a bit uncomfortable but it doesn’t get much better for the Devils.
Pick: Toronto Maple Leafs -1.5
NHL Betting Pick: Top Play of the Day
New York Islanders [-1.5 (+195), -134 ML) @ New York Rangers [+1.5 (-250), +112 ML] - 7pm
Both New York teams began the season playing better than many expected. It’s stayed that way for the Islanders, who are 8-2 in their last 10 games and just one point out of a Wild Card spot in the eastern conference. Meanwhile, the Rangers have began to fall off with four straight losses and are sinking in the standings. The Islanders have won eight of nine on the road and seven of their last eight at Madison Square Garden. Give me a stronger Islanders team with decent line going across town to take on the Rangers.
Pick: New York Islanders -134
NHL Betting Pick: Underdog Value Play of the Day
Washington Capitals [+1.5 (-230), +120 ML] @ Boston Bruins [-1.5 (+180), -148 ML) - 7pm
The Bruins currently sit in the No. 3 spot in the Atlantic division and are an excellent team on home ice (16-5-0). They also put a five-game winning streak on the line when they host Metropolitan-leading Washington. However, it looks like Boston will send its backup goalie between the pipes while the Capitals send starter Brayden Holtby into net. These two teams haven’t played since the opening night of the season, but they have each proven to be eastern conference powers. With these teams mostly equal, I’m gonna take the defending champs on the road with some value to end the Bruins’ winning streak.
Pick: Washington Capitals +120
Best of luck!
