Betting On The NHL For Monday, Jan. 14
The NHL is unlike other professional leagues in terms of its parity. The same thing that makes hockey sometimes difficult to handicap in terms of betting is what makes the league so fun to watch. There are more strong teams than there are playoff spots, meaning each game and each point is of huge importance. Teams who find themselves on a short losing streak could suddenly be out of a playoff spot, and on the flipside, a couple of wins strung together could propel a squad into postseason position. With less than two weeks to play before breaking for the NHL All-Star Game in San Jose, teams are looking to stack up points before getting some much-needed time off.

Puck Line Suggestions
***FOR YOUR INFORMATION: Puck Line (PL) betting in hockey means that you are not only wagering on a team to merely win the game since that is what betting on the money line (ML) is. The puck line is a 1.5-goal spread that either gives the underdog some cushion on a loss, or forces a favorite to win by at least two goals in order to cash a victory on the wager. The odds for this type of bet correspond with which side you pick, as selecting a team that must win by two goals (-1.5) creates much better odds, and selecting a team on the other side (+1.5) worsens odds. Many times, a win or a loss in these types of bets comes down to the making or missing of an empty-net tally while the score is within one late in the contest.
PUCK LINE EXAMPLE: Let’s say the Capitals are -195 on the money line, but +135 on the puck line. This means one would have to wager $195 for every $100 on Washington securing a win. On the puck line, since Washington must win by two goals (-1.5), the payout is a much more robust +135. This means for a $100 wager on a two-goal victory, the bet would pay $135.***
Colorado Avalanche [+1.5 (-180), +155 ML] @ Toronto Maple Leafs [-1.5 (+143), -190 ML] - 7:30pm
Vezina Trophy candidate goaltender Frederik Andersen returns for Toronto after missing the past six games due to injury/flu. I believe this gives an already stellar team a huge boost against an inferior opponent on home ice. The Avalanche have been skidding for about six weeks straight, including losing four of five to begin the new year. Toronto has not quite been as dominant at home as many of us would’ve expected, but its firepower on offense led by John Tavares and Auston Matthews is undeniable. Plus, it’s easier to stomach the 1.5-goal spread when you look at the opponent’s struggles of late.
Pick: Toronto Maple Leafs -1.5
Montreal Canadiens [+1.5 (-177), +160 ML] @ Boston Bruins [-1.5 (+140), -195 ML] - 7:30pm
Boston hosts Montreal in a matchup or original six teams, but it’s been a one-sided series of late. The Bruins have won eight of nine against the Canadiens and are a strong 16-6-0 on home ice this season. There’s always a worry about winning by two when Carey Price is in net for Montreal, but Boston is playing good hockey and is overall the stronger team. The Bruins also know they must keep pace with Boston in the Atlantic, so give me the home squad.
Pick: Boston Bruins -1.5
NHL Betting Pick: Top Play of the Day
St. Louis Blues [+1.5 (-186), +150 ML] @ Washington Capitals [-1.5 (+148), -182 ML - 7pm
Nobody likes giving huge juice on the money line, but sometimes that direction is necessary. With the Capitals starting their backup goaltender Pheonix Copley, it feels risky to take the puck line, even on home ice. Still, I feel confident in taking the Metropolitan’s top team to get a win over the Blues, who have played just 17 road games as opposed to 26 home games. The Caps are 13-6-3 on home ice, 6-2-2 in their last 10 and have a decent track record against St. Louis. Give me the defending champs to lock down two points.
Pick: Washington Capitals -182
NHL Betting Pick: Value Play of the Day
Buffalo Sabres [+1.5 (-275), +105 ML] @ Edmonton Oilers [-1.5 (+210), -125 ML]- 10pm
With a short slate on Monday, there aren’t too many great options for this pick. However, we are going with the Oilers to deliver an emphatic win over the slumping Sabres at home. It’s always difficult for eastern conference teams to travel west and pick up wins, and Buffalo is not currently in top form. Edmonton is barely over .500 on home ice and hasn’t played well of late either, but that’s exactly why the odds are so high and the value is so great. Definitely proceed with caution taking the Oilers at any point. But if you’re looking for some major value, go for Edmonton to get ahead and grab an empty-net goal on Buffalo.
Pick: Edmonton Oilers -1.5 (+210)
Best of luck!
