Betting On The NHL For Thursday, Jan. 17
As we move into the second part of January and well into the second half of the season, NJ sports betting players are learning the NHL is unlike other professional leagues in terms of its parity. The same thing that makes hockey sometimes difficult to handicap in terms of betting is what makes the league so fun to watch. There are more strong teams than there are playoff spots, meaning each game and each point is of huge importance. Teams that find themselves on a short losing streak could suddenly be out of a playoff spot, and on the flipside a couple of wins strung together could propel a squad into postseason position. With less than two weeks to play before breaking for the NHL All-Star Game in San Jose, teams are looking to stack up points before getting some much-needed time off.

Puck Line Suggestions
***FOR YOUR INFORMATION: Puck Line (PL) betting in hockey means that you are not only wagering on a team to merely win the game, since that is what betting on the money line (ML) is. The puck line is a 1.5-goal spread that either gives the underdog some cushion on a loss, or forces a favorite to win by at least two goals in order to cash a victory on the wager. The odds for this type of bet correspond with which side you pick, as selecting a team that must win by two goals (-1.5) creates much better odds, and selecting a team on the other side (+1.5) worsens odds. Many times, a win or a loss in these types of bets comes down to the making or missing of an empty-net tally while the score is within one late in the contest.
PUCK LINE EXAMPLE: Let’s say the Capitals are -195 on the money line, but +135 on the puck line. This means one would have to wager $195 for every $100 on Washington securing a win. On the puck line, since Washington must win by two goals (-1.5), the payout is a much more robust +135. This means for a $100 wager on a two-goal victory, the bet would pay $135.***
St. Louis Blues [+1.5 (-210), +135 ML] @ Boston Bruins [-1.5 (+163), -165 ML] - 7pm
The Bruins are coming off a tough loss in Philadelphia and have to travel before hosting the well-rested Blues on Thursday evening. Winning by two goals after getting no rest is a tough ask, but Boston does welcome starting goalie Tuukka Rask back into net as they look to rebound. The Bruins sit one point behind Toronto in the division and must keep pace. As one of the league’s best on home ice (16-6-1), we can expect Boston to come out ready and take control of the game early on. Despite the lack of rest, the Bruins take down a Blues team ready to head home from a long road trip.
Pick: Boston Bruins -1.5 (+163)
Los Angeles Kings [+1.5 (-195), +155 ML] @ Dallas Stars [-1.5 (+150), -186 ML] - 8:30pm
This looks to be a major rebound game for the Stars, who were shut out on home ice in their last game. Los Angeles scored late to secure a point in its last game in Minnesota, but comes into this matchup last in the western conference. Dallas is now knotted with Colorado for a playoff spot and needs to use home ice to its advantage. The Stars have now lost three straight, but the Kings are 7-19 in their last 26 road games and Dallas won’t be getting shut out twice in a row at home. Take Dallas to get the extra goal and cover the puck line.
Pick: Dallas Stars -1.5 (+150)
NHL Betting Pick: Top Play of the Day
Toronto Maple Leafs [+1.5 (-220), +123 ML] @ Tampa Bay Lightning [-1.5 (+170), -148 ML] - 7pm
The top two teams in the Atlantic Division clash as the Lightning host the Maple Leafs as favorites on Thursday evening. Toronto’s excellent road record (15-5-1) is only surpassed by Tampa Bay’s home record (19-4-0), and the Maple Leafs have been playing .500 hockey for the past month while the Lightning compete with only themselves atop the standings. Tampa Bay’s starting goaltender is back to the top of his game while the Leafs’ netminder is easing his way back into action after missing some time. Hard to lay off the Bolts at a decent enough price considering they are playing at home.
Pick: Tampa Bay Lightning -148
NHL Betting Pick: Value Play of the Day
Chicago Blackhawks [+1.5 (-275), +104 ML] @ New York Rangers [-1.5 (+210), -125 ML]- 8pm
Taking a look at the Rangers in this spot because of the massive payout combined with the current for the Blackhawks. Chicago is a last-place team with four consecutive losses, including one in which they allowed eight goals to the Devils. New York is not a terrible team at home and has a goaltender in Henrik Lundqvist that can still steal a game on any given night. The Rangers are no juggernaut, but there is value in getting double your money with the better team and it could be worth the leap on the puck line.
Pick: New York Rangers -1.5 (+210)
Best of luck!
