After overcoming a 16-point deficit in an overtime win during Wild Card weekend, the Texans are traveling to Kansas City as double-digit underdogs, according to odds from most NJ betting sites. The line opened at Chiefs -8 and currently sits at -9.5 on many books, but Kansas City has been pushed to -10 currently while the total opened in the high-40s and has since reached 51 points at SugarHouse.
In Week 6, Houston fell behind 17-3 early but stunned Kansas City with 20 points in the second quarter en route to a 31-24 win at Arrowhead. Now, Watson and the Texans return for round two in the postseason.
Teams that have defeated the Chiefs this season have done soo because they successfully ran the football. Houston notched 192 yards on the ground behind Carlos Hyde while Watson threw for 280 more, and those 472 total yards allowed the Texans to possess the ball for nearly 40 minutes of the game.
One should expect a similar game plan at Arrowhead on Sunday since the best way to beat Patrick Mahomes is to keep him off the field. On Kansas City’s side, this group is fully healthy and riding a winning streak that led to an unlikely first-round bye during the Wild Card round.
According to Football Outsiders, the Chiefs rank third in offense DVOA with a unit led by Mahomes and featuring the NFL’s best tight end in Travis Kelce and one of the league’s most dynamic players in Tyreke Hill, who accounted for two scores in Week 6.
For what it’s worth, the Chiefs are 10-5-1 against the spread this season, including 4-3-1 at home. The Texans were mediocre in this category, although five of its eight ATS wins came on the road.
It’s always fun when a rematch happens in the postseason. Will Mahomes and the Chiefs defend home field this time around? We think so because all the trends point toward Andry Reid teams with extra rest, but we are going against some of those stats to say Houston can still cover this massive spread.
Many are making the point that Kansas city isn’t the same team it was in Week 6, which is completely true. The defense ranks top 10 in scoring has made a huge turnaround during the six-game win streak to close the season. Also, the likes of Mahomes and Hill (among others) are fully healthy.
It makes sense the Chiefs are such huge favorites on Sunday but still, the Texans managed to win that Week 6 despite a rocky start from Watson and three turnovers. It starts with the running game, which will help Houston control the clock once again, and it doesn’t hurt that deep threat WR Will Fuller V is expected to play after missing the Wild Card game.
Not only does the offense immediately becomes more dynamic when the attention can’t be focused on DeAndre Hopkins alone, but it should also be noted that the Texans’ defense also features a revamped secondary and key pieces that are now healthy.
For us, all of this means that even in a likely win for Kansas City, Houston is capable of keeping this one within striking distance and covering the double-digit number. Start your Sunday NFL divisional round predictions with the Texans and the under on a total that continues being inflated.
Because there are only two games per day and four over the course of the weekend, sites like SugarHouse Sportsbook are always coming up with new and inventive markets for NFL playoff prop bets.
