The Denver Broncos are once again traveling east, this time to visit the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on Thursday, October 1 at 8:20 PM EST.

At most sportsbooks, the Broncos opened as 2.5-point road favorites but that number has grown to -3 on multiple sites including BetMGM, which we will use for our Week 3 TNF picks. The total is currently set very low at just 40.5 points for what is expected to be a defensive battle.

Let’s be very clear: if this wasn’t a prime time game this week, there is no way we are betting on it. With that said, here we are. Through the first few games, both teams have struggled but they are proof that you can be winless in very different ways heading into the Week 4 schedule.

The Broncos are dealing with a myriad of injuries, including losing QB Drew Lock (shoulder) for several weeks and No. 1 wideout Courtland Sutton (ACL) for the season. This comes just weeks after losing Von Miller (ankle) for the season, and while Denver is waiting for CB A.J. Bouye (shoulder) to return.

But for what it’s worth, the Broncos have continued to battle and acquitting themselves pretty well, covering each of the first two games this season. QB Jeff Driskel managed to keep things tight with the Steelers in Week 2 before the 28-10 loss to Tampa in Week 3. But with Driskel out in Week 4 and Brett Rypien set to start, you can’t help but be concerned for the offense.

Speaking of Gang Green, this team also has a ton of injuries but frankly, is just terrible and depressing to watch. The offense and appears bereft of weapons on offense to help its quarterback Sam Darnold, who is also playing poorly to begin the season. But the unit also lacks creativity under Adam Gase, regardless of who is in uniform, which speaks to a much larger problem. In fact, the coach is squarely on the hot seat going into Week 4.

After three blowout losses to begin the season and nearly zero signs of life, how do we trust the Jets to play a competitive football game? By holding your nose a little bit when you make this bet. Because if we ignore all the Jets’ flaws for a second, things really do line up as well for New York as they possibly can.

Hear me out. The home team is at a huge advantage on Thursday nights due to the combination of short rest and travel for the other side. In this case, the Broncos are traveling all the way easy for the second time in a span of two weeks after playing Pittsburgh in Week 2. Considering all of the injuries, travel, and short rest, that’s a ton of moving parts for Denver to deal with by Thursday.

With the Broncos sure to rely on its running game, that is the one area of the field the Jets can match up with most teams. This means that in a low-scoring affair, taking the home team with the points could be a smarter betting move than going with recency bias alone.

The offense still needs to show up in some way, but the law of averages says it will eventually score a couple of touchdowns (although we can’t be sure). And even though the Jets do turn the ball over quite a bit, Denver has just two takeaways in three games. Heck, even the Jets’ defense has three so far this season.

The Broncos have been and are the better team even with all of their bad injury luck. But taking all factors into account, we’re going to do the least fun thing in all of NFL betting and wager on the Jets and the points.
