The Atlanta Falcons are visiting the Minnesota Vikings at U.S. Bank Stadium on Sunday, October 18 at 1 pm. According to FanDuel, the Vikings open as favorites of -3.5 (-110) at home with a moneyline of -186. On the other side, the road underdogs are +3.5 (-110) and +156 on the moneyline.
The early part of the season hasn’t exactly been kind to Atlanta or Minnesota. The Falcons are winless and 1-4 against the spread through its first five games while the Vikings are 1-4 in those games and 3-2 against the number.
Minnesota was expected to compete for the NFC North and it looks like this team won’t do that, which is a bit of a letdown. But with that said, it had a pretty rough schedule at the start and has played pretty well lately, covering the number in three consecutive games. Even though they were defeated by a late Seahawks’ score in Week 5, Minnesota controlled large portions of the game and still easily covered against one of the league’s best teams.
Can we say the same for Atlanta? The Falcons’ only cover came when it blew a late two-touchdown lead against Dallas. The defense allowed at least 30 points in each of its first four games.
In general, this team cannot get out of its own way and after its most recent embarrassing defeat in Week 5, head coach Dan Quinn was fired with the next game just three days away. Adding to the question marks is the fact that the Atlanta offense will potentially be without star wideout Julio Jones, which only makes this choice easier.
On the other side, an injury to Minnesota star RB Dalvin Cook is surely a cause for concern. But Alexander Mattison is one of the most trusted backups in the league and should be able to carry the load, at least for a game or two if need be.
Minnesota features one of the most efficient run offenses in football, according to DVOA metrics from Football Outsider. Couple that with Atlanta’s second-to-last pass defense, and the Vikings could have a field day with Adam Thielen and Justin Jefferson. It’s not too hard to go with Minnesota for our Falcons vs. Vikings picks.
