Back in March 2019, West Virginia suspended online sports betting due to a contractual dispute between vendors, but after months of uncertainty, West Virginia sports betting is officially back. And with its return, the DraftKings Sportsbook app has officially launched in the Mountain State.
What To Expect From DraftKings Sportsbook WV
Those interested in sports betting in West Virginia will now be able to wager on sports and leagues such as the NFL, NCAAF, MLB, golf, NBA, NHL, tennis, Nascar and more. The types of bets will include your usual spread bets, over/unders and props, as well as futures betting and in-game betting.
Matt Kalish, the co-founder and Chief Revenue Officer at DraftKings, had this to say about the sportsbook expanding into West Virginia:
"We are thrilled to continue our DraftKings Sportsbook expansion by getting our product into the hands of West Virginians. We look forward to serving our fans with the top-rated DraftKings Sportsbook app, that features numerous consumer protection features and strives to provide the broadest selection of betting options with the best odds and rewards in West Virginia. DraftKings knows the American sports fan better than anyone, and we look forward to proving that in the Mountain State."
There will be a DraftKings WV app for iOS and Android. You may also make bets at the website on your desktop computer.
John Finamore, who is Sr. Vice President of Regional Operations at Penn National Gaming believes the sports betting site will be a big plus for West Virginians:
"We are pleased to help welcome DraftKings to West Virginia. They provide a quality online sports betting experience that will benefit their customers and the state."
Will DraftKings Sportsbook Thrive In West Virginia?
So the question remains, how will DraftKings Sportsbook translate from New Jersey to West Virginia? DK has helped Resorts Digital accumulate more than $43 million in overall gambling revenue thus far in 2019, putting them second behind Golden Nugget Online and its group of casinos and sportsbooks. In July, the sportsbook generated almost $4 million in revenue. That success comes with a tax rate of 13% in New Jersey for online sportsbooks.
In West Virginia, though a smaller state than NJ, comes with a 10% tax rate. The other regulations are as follows:
- You cannot bet on high school sporting events
- Esports betting is legal as long as the participants are at least 18 years of age
- There are no limitations on college sports betting, including within WV
- Each casino licensee can have up to three individually branded online platforms (NJ casino licensee can hold up to five)
So with a lower tax, the ability to offer esports, no limitations on college sports betting and less operators to potentially compete with, we expect DraftKings Sportsbook WV to thrive and help the state's online sports betting to reach its full potential.
DraftKings Continues To Grow
DraftKings continues to not only grow, but evolve. In December 2018, the sports betting company ventured into casino games with DraftKings Casino. They have already opened a land-based sportsbook in Mississippi. And with the app entering WV, it is only a matter of time before Pennsylvania enters the picture. As more states legalize sports betting in the US, DraftKings Sportsbook will surely set up shop.
DraftKings Sportsbook WV Bonus Offer
If you have followed DK at all, you will notice how often they push special promotions such as odds boosts or in the case, welcome bonuses. Depending on the time of year, DraftKings always seems to up the ante when it comes to bonus offers, and that is no different here with West Virginia.
DraftKings Sportsbook WV offers a deposit bonus not just for new players, but existing ones as well. When you make a deposit up to $500, DraftKings will match 50%. But keep in mind, the playthrough requirement is 25x. But that isn't all. DraftKings is giving players a $200 risk-free bet for their very first wager on the site.
