Here is your guide to the US Online Lottery. In December of 2011, the Justice Department produced a view of the Wire Act that opened the door for state-by-state sales of online lotto tickets. Due to this change, there are currently eight online lottery states.

State lotteries have been popular for decades and now states have begun to introduce online lotteries to allow people the opportunity to win money through the comfort of their own home. Currently, 44 states and the District of Columbia have established some form of lottery. Each state offers a mix of instant win scratch tickets and traditional drawing-style games with large jackpots. But several states have moved beyond just selling lottery tickets online, as they now offer instant win games with significant prizes.

You have to live in one of the online lottery states in order to buy a Mega Millions ticket online. You’re in luck if you live in Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire or Texas.

What States Offer Online Lottery Games?

There are currently eight online lottery states, but only Pennsylvania doesn’t sell Mega Million tickets online. Minnesota used to offer online lottery instant win games, but that is no longer the case. Below is a full list of the following states that offer online lottery games.

Georgia Online Lottery

In November of 2012, Georgia became the second state to have online lottery. The Georgia Online Lottery offers draw games, including Fantasy 5, Mega Millions and Powerball. The GA Online Lottery also offers Keno games and their exclusive Diggi Games. Diggi Games are a combination of social games and electronic scratch-offs. They include crosswords and bingo games.

The Georgia Lottery is among the top states in the US when it comes to per capita lottery sales.

Illinois Online Lottery

The Illinois Lottery offered online tickets sales in March of 2012, becoming the first state to do so. The Illinois Online Lottery then added online tickets to the popular multi-state Powerball lottery in December 2012. The IL Online Lottery then included Daily Lottery Games and Instant Games.

The Illinois iLottery totaled $36.9 million within the first two years of online lottery sales.

Kentucky Online Lottery

Although lawmakers approved Kentucky Online Lottery ticket sales in 2013, it took three years for the state to develop their online ticketing system. Finally in April 2016, KY Online Lottery went live.

The draw games include Powerball, Mega Millions, Lucky for Life and Kentucky Cash Ball 225.

Many of the Kentucky Lottery instants online are electronic versions of scratch-off games available at local retailers. There are at least 34 instants online games available by the Kentucky Online Lottery and that number continues to grow.

Michigan Online Lottery

The Michigan Lottery launched online lottery games in 2014. The first games available were Instant Keno and electronic scratch-offs, but the Michigan Online Lottery has grown exponentially since that time.

In January 2016, the Michigan iLottery began offer its most popular draw games. Now, there are three types of lottery games available online for the MI Online Lottery. These include:

Michigan Online Lottery draw games include Powerball, Mega Millions, Fantasy 5 and Lotto 47. There are also a number of Instant Online games such as Home Run Riches Online, Queen Of Diamonds, Instant Football Payout, Triple 7’s, Cashword and Pot O’ Gold. The MI Online Lottery also has four Keno-style games.

Minnesota Online Lottery

The Minnesota Lottery launched online sales in 2014 without any kind of legislative approval, becoming the first state to offer instant-win games online. In May of 2015, however, Minnesota lawmakers voted to make online lottery sales illegal. But that has now again changed.

In June 2018, Minnesotans can use their smartphones to buy tickets for Powerball and other lottery games based on the drawing of numbers. The online sales for the Minnesota Online Lottery is handled by the company Jackpocket. The MN Online Lottery currently offers Powerball, Mega Millions, Lucky for Life, Lotto America, Gopher 5, Northstar Cash, Daily 3 and Millionaire Raffle.

New Hampshire Online Lottery

On Sept. 18, 2017, New Hampshire Online Lottery went live, becoming the fifth state to do offer online lottery sales. NH Online Lottery is operated by NeoPollard Interactive, it features several online instant win and draw games.

Mega Millions and Powerball tickets can be purchased online, with custom or quick number selection.

Pennsylvania Online Lottery

Pennsylvania passed an expansive gambling law in October 2017, which included online an online lottery. PA online lottery games went live on May 29, 2018. Lawmakers hope the lottery will generate $250 mill over the next five years.

Pennsylvania Lottery currently participates in both Powerball and Mega Millions, but these games are not online as of yet. As of now, the only online offerings include instant win games, similar to that of scratch-off games found at retailers.

The PA Lottery also offers Keno and Virtual Sports Monitor games.
