Tennessee Sports Betting Could Be Legalized Before TN Casinos
In what can be seen as a surprising development, Tennessee has put forth a sports-betting bill. State Representative Rick Staples is the one who filed the Tennessee Sports Gaming Act, which will be addressed at the 111th General Assembly when it convenes on January 8, 2019. Considering the state doesn’t have any casinos or racetracks, it will be interesting to see what the plans are for Tennessee sports betting and which establishments will handle TN sportsbooks.
Tennessee Sports Betting Act - What Does It Mean?
The bill, which is titled “HB 0001,” is the first kind of legislation on sports betting for Tennessee. The piece of legislation includes a tax of 10 percent on an operators, the ability to have mobile wagering and a gaming commission that would be appointed by the governor, Speaker of the House and Speaker of the Senate. The bill may also require a county-by-county vote.
What’s Next For Tennessee Sportsbooks?
There are still many hurdles for Tennessee to overcome before they have legalized sportsbooks, as the state’s own governor, Bill Lee, has spoken out against it. But considering the state had no signs of gambling before this bill was filed, one has to believe it is a step in the right direction for those in favor of Tennessee sports betting.
In 2019 NY Sportsbooks, PA Sportsbooks, and WV sportsbooks should all join the NJ sportsbooks in offering legal sports betting apps in the US.
